Yahoo! News is gathering brief first-person accounts, photos and video from the severe winter weather in the northeastern United States. Here's one resident's story.
FIRST PERSON | STORRS, Conn. -- I love winter and I love New England. No going to work today. My husband and I went out to breakfast, stocked up on water and firewood and chocolate chip cookies. Now we sit on our couch watching The Weather Channel and checking our Intellicast maps on our iPads. Our weather station, laptops, magazines, and books are close at hand, and as the snow begins to cover our yard, we are giddy with anticipation. We're ready for you, Winter Storm Nemo, Blizzard Charlotte or whatever they're calling you now!
True New Englanders are not complaining or stressing out. Sure, there may be power outages and we won't be driving anywhere probably for the next 24 hours. Tomorrow will be a long day of shoveling out. But if New England is part of you, whether you were born here or not, you feel it with your soul. You smile as you hear the meteorologists saying one to two FEET of snow. You can't wait to take a walk down your country road and feel the cold bite your cheeks. You're excited for tomorrow, when the storm winds down, to get outside with your camera and take breath-taking pictures of Horse Barn Hill.
I live for this, as I do the bright greens of spring, the humid days of summer, and the magical colors of fall. I wouldn't -- couldn't -- live anywhere else. I wonder how high the winds will get at the peak of the storm at the top of Mount Washington. I wonder what Jordan Pond looks like covered in two feet of snow. I gaze out at the birch, oak and maple trees in my yard, at the birds at my bird feeder gathering last second seeds. About an inch or two of snow already on the ground. I take a deep breath. Here we go. Yes, I live for this. I am a New Englander.
