Do Cheap Bike Parts And Brakes Go Hand In Hand

When it comes to riding your bike probably the most important piece of equipment besides you using your brain is your brakes as far as safety is concerned. The third thing would probably be your helmet. The thing is when it comes to looking for cheap bike parts is it worth the risk when it comes to brakes.

A recurring theme when I talk about cheap bike parts is am I referring to quality or price. Let me assure you I?m always referring to price. There is never a reason to buy cheap quality anything in my book but I understand that even when it comes to good quality parts there are different qualities. I just don?t see any reason to buy something that will break down before you get a chance to use it and there certainly are those kinds of parts.?

When it comes to brakes for your mountain bike, there are two primary options, V or rim brakes and disc brakes.

They are very important and often the most overlooked part of your bike. With whichever setup you have on your bike it?s important to be sure they are functioning properly before you set out on a ride.

Some ask which setup is really the best. And the answer is it depends on the kind of riding you do most. If you like riding the streets and easy trails that?s one thing but if you?re an aggressive off-roader well that is quite another.

Rim brakes are great for road and easy trails. They are lighter in weight and typically lower in maintenance. They have been used for years and do a good job in most conditions but they sometimes just don?t meet up to the challenge.

If you love descending steep hills and taking hairpin turns if your brakes don?t work then you are in trouble.

So if you really need to be able to stop quickly then disc brakes are the ones you need. They are a lot more powerful and therefore give you more control. You need and will use plenty of braking power on say a 5 mile long descent. They are less likely to lock up and easier to control. They also don?t get affected by muddy or wet conditions the same way rim brakes do.

So now the question is where can you get good quality brakes for less? Brakes do wear out and when it comes to rim brakes typically all you have to do is replace the pads and maybe adjust the cable and your set to go again. When it comes to disc brakes there is a lot more involved but it is not that difficult but it will definitely cost more.

I think it is important to support our local bike shops because most of them do a good job and are important to us. The problem is they don?t always have the cheapest prices. That being said there is more to getting value for your money than the price of the part. If you really need to save money on the part the best place to look is online. Here you will find online bike shops as well as auction sites and classified sites all of which you can shop and find good deals.

In my opinion there is no one site that has a corner on being the best for saving you money on any or all parts. I love the search for cheap bike parts that for me is part of the fun. You may be different as we all tend to be but if you look around I am sure you will find your best place to shop.
