Have you ever felt a need to set goals? Why do we need goals? As you head into this new year do you feel that things happen to you just because they do? Do you feel you have control over what happens to you in your daily life? According to the dictionary in my hands a goal is the purpose toward which an endeavor is directed. Therefore if someone has certain things they want to do in this upcoming year it might be a good idea to set a goal to accomplish these endeavors. I guarantee that if you write goals down and pursue them you will have much more control of your life and will decrease your stress level whether or not they are achieved. The best idea is to set goals that are achievable yet continuous. An individual should continue to add to the goals forever. The whole point of goal setting is not the end result but is actually the journey or the work involved while trying to achieve the goals.
A good way to start is to begin by making a list of all things you want to accomplish during the upcoming year. Next write the ones you want to accomplish within the next month. For example, you may have just received a guitar as a gift at Christmas and want to start playing as soon as possible. Your goal may be to learn how to play the guitar. Next, you would write down objectives that would help you accomplish this goal. Step one may be to call local music stores to see who offers guitar lessons. Step two might be to actually sign up for guitar lessons. Step three might be to practice two to three times a week on the guitar. You get the idea. Again, the point of setting goals is the actual journey towards the goal, not a goal itself. You may never be the greatest guitar player ever but by setting the goal to learn how play, you will be on your journey to learning how to play guitar and be a great guitar player much sooner.
Now you need to date your goals. For example, if this is January 1 you may say January 2: call music store. January 7: first guitar lesson. January 8: start practicing guitar. By giving yourselves dates to work on these goals you?re more likely to stay on task to achieve them. You may also give your goal a final date. In other words you might say: be proficient in playing the guitar in two months.
Now, your January goal was to begin playing guitar, you have a twomonth goal of being proficient on the guitar. If you still cannot play a chord you know you?re not very proficient. On the other hand if you can play songs and sing along with them you have accomplished this part of your goal thus far. You can always adjust your goals based on your progress as well. If you are ahead of the game, set them higher!
You must also visualize yourself achieving the goals. In the above example you see yourself planning the guitar, see yourself playing chords and singing with your guitar, your experience should include all five senses: sight, smell, taste, touch and sound. Insert these images into your mind as you visualize your goals. What do things smell like? Where do you play the guitar? What does it sound like? What does your guitar look like? See yourself achieving your goal, see how others will react as you play guitar for them. These are all ways to hasten the process. As mentioned above, I see the journey towards the goal, not the end result, as the most fulfilling.
By doing the above methods of setting dates and visualizing your goal s , you can and should have objective ways of measuring your outcome.
To help you get started and to give you some good examples of how they should work I have come up with 12 goals, one for each month of the year. Please feel free to interchange the goals or replace them with your own. This is just a template by which to go by.
January ? the early bird catches the worm
The goal for this month is to get up one hour earlier than you have for the past year. For example, if you get up at seven o?clock to be at work at eight o?clock you will get up at six o?clock. During that extra hour you will read, listen to tapes or better yourself or your health in some capacity. This extra hour is to improve your mind and your wellbeing. If you do this each and every day during the year you now have gained 365 hours of knowledge, or exercise or some other form of self-improvement. Do this without fail. You will be amazed at the results.
February ? it?s alive! It?s alive!
If you haven?t done so already now is the time to write down your goals. Each and every day list your top five goals for the day. It may include picking up drycleaning going to the supermarket, exercise or calling an old friend. Whatever the case may be write down your top five priorities each day and check them off as you do them. Also, write down your main goal for this particular month each day and the steps you?re going to achieve it. What this does is it brings your ideas, your goals and your activities to life. By seeing them everyday in writing, you?re more likely to achieve your overall goals and have a stress free life.
March ? Rocky! Rocky!
Here is something else to add if you have not done so already. Begin an exercise program. Now, there are millions of exercise programs out there some good, some very bad. Do your research and find the one that Nits best with your schedule. Don?t look for ?get Nit quick? schemes as this should be a lifestyle change, not a temporary ?fixer upper?. If you want more information on fitness programs visit www.HipToBeFit.com on the internet. There are many fitness web sites and articles on exercise from which to choose. The main thing is to stay with one that works for you and make time each day to do some form of exercise. Please consult a physician prior to beginning your program if you haven?t exercised in awhile. Make sure you start slowly.
April ? you are number one in my book.
By now you should have been writing your daily goals and habits on paper each and every day. Now let?s tweak things just a little. Write your top six things to accomplish for the day. Prioritize them 16. Begin at number 1 and do not start number two until number one is finished. Then do number two. Do not start number three until number two is finished and so on. If you get through the day without finishing all your goals then move the unfinished goals to the next day and rank your goals for that day 16. You will be amazed at what you can accomplish in a given day using the system. Good luck and have fun!
May ? an Apple a day?
You should make an effort to eat three meals a day with each meal having foods from the four major food groups. These being proteins, carbohydrates, fruits, vegetables and fats. The best way to do this is to divide your plate into four quadrants. Each quadrant will have a representative from the four food groups. Each day your calories should be divided up into 40 to 50% carbohydrates, 15 to 20% protein. There?s a lot of information, some good and some really bad on diet routines. You should judge the information carefully and take time to look at the credentials of who is giving the information. For more information on diet and exercise visit family HipToBeFit.com
June ? remember Thumper
In the story Bambi, Thumper?s mother always reminded him not to say anything at all unless he had something good to say about someone. During this month if you are tempted to degrade, slander or put someone down remember Thumper. Make a habit of saying positive and nice things about people in your daily interactions. You will view the world in a whole new way and enjoy life to a greater degree. Forget enemies and those who put you down in the past. This month everyone is wonderful and you must tell everyone about it.
July ? Christmas in July
It?s the haphappiest time of the year. Every day is a great day??. some are better than others?.. but everyday is a great day. Just like Christmas. When you get up, an hour earlier hopefully at this point, the sun is always shining, the birds are always singing and everyone is fantastic. No matter what happens or what is said, every day must be a great day for the next 30 days. You?ll be surprised how this will change your life as you put it into your routine. After the thirty days are up, you will want to continue this daily habit because it will feel so good. Get ready, this may be the best goal setting month of all.
August ? teach the old dog
Yes, even an old dog can learn new tricks. Take this month to learn something new. Whether it is guitar lessons like in the first part of the book, karate, a new language, or a new skill, take this month and learn about something you never have done before. You can even use your hour at the beginning of each day to read or learn more about your new habits. Use your creativity and imagination and come up with something really neat to learn.
September ? mend the fence
We all have had a relationship at one time or another with a relative, a friend or a coworker when the relationship went sour. It could be you don?t talk to that person the same way or maybe don?t even talk to that person at all. Use this month to reconsider that relationship. Maybe take them out to lunch, drop a note, email or a phone call to begin the process. Take it one step at a time and try to mend the relationship. Life is too short to carry grudges. The other person may feel exactly the way you are. You?ll take a load off you mind and add a great asset to your life.
October ? show me how
Are you ever curious about what your coworkers jobs entail? Are you curious about the ins and outs of the business you work in? Now is your time to find these things out. Without prying ask other coworkers what they do each day, how they do it and what their job description is. It will benefit both parties involved. It will allow the person being asked to focus on exactly what they do each day and allow the person asking the questions to show some interest in the first person?s life. You may make a new friend. build a better relationship with a coworker and learn something in the process. You may even realize you want to switch departments or alter your career someday. Take time to do this in the month of October. Don?t be shy, go do it now.
November ? thanks
Take this month to send out thank you cards to people who have influenced you in your lifetime. This is your chance to say thank you for all they have done and brighten their day. This is also a great exercise for people in business after you met someone for the first time, especially a good contact. A note saying thank you for your time will go a long way in building a great business relationship. Make a habit of sending two to three cards per day. You?ll be surprised at the number of contacts you will make and the relationships you will build. Have fun and get writing.
December ? it is better to give
?Tis the season? How do you feel when you do something nice for someone? Over the past few months I?m sure you engrossed yourself in one or more of the goals for the month. It should make you feel good, happy, even important maybe. Continue this month to do things for other people. It may mean opening the door for someone, listening to someone when they have a problem, or maybe even donating to charity. Use this time to reflect about what is important to you and how you can help the community and the people around you. This month, give yourself, your time and your talents.
Review the year
Well, you had 12 goals to accomplish and I hope you at least attempted every one of them. As I said before the goals are not an end all you may be actively pursuing each one of them as we speak. I hope you are. Continue to add to the goals starting higher and higher and having more and more fun with your life. Look back and see which ones were important to you or meant a lot to you. Continue those throughout the next year and strive to improve yourself.
Now sit down and write out goals for each month of the next year. They can be versions of the previous year?s or new ones altogether. I hope this has allowed you to look deeper inside yourself and to look at those around you differently. I?m sure you are a better person and have a better outlook on life after pursuing these goals. Good luck and keep goal writing.
