PFT: Ravens to hire ex-Indy coach Caldwell

Bill Belichick9AP

Vince Wilfork?s physique may not show it, but Patriots coach Bill Belichick says Wilfork is a great athlete who?s in great shape and one of the biggest reasons the Patriots are in the Super Bowl.

At his press conference in Indianapolis today, Belichick praised Wilfork for making back-to-back big plays late in the fourth quarter of the AFC Championship Game, noting that Wilfork had already been on the field for more than 60 snaps at that point but still had the energy to stuff a run on third down and pressure Ravens quarterback Joe Flacco on fourth down.

?Late in the fourth quarter when we had to have it, the whole game was on the line, he made the plays for us,? Belichick said.

Wilfork, who?s listed at 325 pounds and looks heavier than that, had two interceptions during the regular season, returning one for 28 yards and the other for 19 yards, and Belichick said those plays proved just how well Wilfork can run.

?Vince is really a good athlete, as we can see from all his interception returns and open-field running and those kind of plays,? Belichick said.

Belichick also noted that Wilfork can play in running or passing situations and doesn?t ask to come off the field and rotate with other defensive linemen.

?He takes a lot of pride in not coming off the field, which I love in a defensive lineman ? that they want to be on the field and not come out,? Belichick said. ?He?s in good condition. Out there at practice today during the offensive period he?s running sprints back and forth on the field, working on his conditioning, with a week to go in the season. I think that?s a sign of his dedication.?

The big gut that hangs over Wilfork?s waistline makes him look like something less than a great athlete, but looks can be deceiving.

?You can talk about his appearance ? maybe it?s not the classic appearance ? but he?s a good athlete, he?s in good shape and he works real hard,? Belichick said.

And without Wilfork, the Patriots probably wouldn?t be in Indianapolis right now.

Roberto Carlos says he will retire this year

Associated Press Sports

updated 8:23 a.m. ET Jan. 30, 2012

SAO PAULO (AP) -Former Brazil left back Roberto Carlos says he will retire from football by the end of the year.

The 38-year-old Roberto Carlos has a contract with Russian club Anzhi until 2013 but said he will stop playing either in June or in December of 2012.

He told Brazil's GloboEsporte.com on Monday that he intends to continue "helping" the Russian club off the field after retiring.

Roberto Carlos played for Brazil until the 2006 World Cup. He helped the national team win the 2002 tournament in South Korea and Japan. He also was a starter when Brazil was runner-up in 1998.

He thrived with Real Madrid from 1996 until 2007 and also played for Inter Milan and Fenerbahce.

Beijing air pollution soars with fireworks smoke (AP)

BEIJING ? Clouds of smoke from Lunar New Year fireworks sent air pollution readings soaring in the more sensitive measurement system Beijing started using a little more than a week ago, reports said Sunday.

Readings of fine particulate matter called PM2.5 reached 1.593 milligrams per cubic meter on the Jan. 22 eve of the holiday, about 100 times worse than the amount considered good for 24-hour exposure, the city's environmental bureau said.

The reading drew wide publicity in the local media on Sunday. The popular Beijing Youth Daily praised the city government for taking a more critical look at air pollution, while urging residents to consider the environmental effects of setting off fireworks.

The readings moderated under relatively clear skies in recent days. By noon Sunday, before the weeklong holiday ends and people return to work, the level stood at a relatively good 0.039.

Beijing is frequently cloaked in yellow haze that obscures buildings a couple of blocks away. On particularly bad days, schools cancel outdoor activities and hospitals treat more people ? particularly the elderly ? for respiratory complaints.

The city began measuring the small particles in the air and releasing the readings on Jan. 21, as concern has grown over Beijing's air pollution from all sources. PM2.5 ? particles less than 2.5 micrometers in size, or about 1/30th the width of an average human hair ? are believed to be the greatest health risk because their smallness means they can lodge deeply in the lungs.

Beijing previously had only given PM10 measurements of coarser particles, which indicated pollution was "light," leading to accusations the true extent of the problem was hidden.

The U.S. Embassy since last year has released PM2.5 readings from a device on its rooftop and some residents have tested the air in their neighborhoods and posted the results online.

The embassy measured more pollution than the city on Sunday, but the sampling stations are 10 miles apart or more.

Beijing says its PM2.5 measuring station is about 4 miles (7 kilometers) west of central Tiananmen Square.

Possible new treatment for Rett Syndrome

ScienceDaily (Jan. 27, 2012) ? Researchers at Oregon Health & Science University have discovered that a molecule critical to the development and plasticity of nerve cells -- brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) -- is severely lacking in brainstem neurons in mutations leading to Rett syndrome, a neurological developmental disorder. The finding has implications for the treatment of neurological disorders, including Rett syndrome that affects one in 10,000 baby girls.

The new discovery is published online in Neuroscience and is expected in the print issue of Neuroscience in March.

Using a mouse model of Rett syndrome, the OHSU team found that mutant neurons in the brainstem fail miserably at making BDNF. When normal neurons are faced with a respiratory challenge, such as low oxygen, they dramatically increase the production of BDNF, whereas mutant neurons do not.

According to the National Institutes of Health, Rett syndrome is estimated to affect one in every 10,000 to 15,000 live births and almost exclusively girls because it is caused by an X-linked gene mutation. In addition to severe problems with motor function, other symptoms of Rett syndrome may include breathing difficulties while awake.

"The new finding, coupled with our previously published data that show BDNF is involved in normal maturation of neuronal pathways controlling cardiorespiratory function, could play a significant role in the development of a treatment for Rett syndrome," said Agnieszka Balkowiec, M.D., Ph.D., principal investigator and associate professor of integrative biosciences in the OHSU School of Dentistry; and adjunct assistant professor of physiology and pharmacology in the OHSU School of Medicine. To conduct this research, Balkowiec partnered with John M. Bissonnette, M.D., professor of obstetrics and gynecology, and cell and developmental biology in the OHSU School of Medicine.

Additional study authors include: Anke Vermehren-Schmaedick, Ph.D., OHSU Department of Biomedical Engineering; Victoria K. Jenkins, B.A., who is currently pursuing her doctorate at Boston University; and Sharon J. Knopp, a research assistant in Bissonnette's lab.

The study was supported by grants from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute of the National Institutes of Health; March of Dimes; and International Rett Syndrome Foundation.

Turning the Hayden Planetarium Into a Giant Videogame

When you say "you'd have to fiddle with the digital projector", you missed a plural, and oversimplified "fiddling" -- from TFA, it's a 6-projector array, with six computers each driving one projector. Since they said it's a 4500x4500 array, I assume each projector is at 2560x1600 or similar, with a few pixels overlap for 2250x1500 effective. I doubt most people, or even most serioius gamers, have a machine capable of chunking that many pixels around (at acceptable quality settings, on modern games), and eve

Stat Alert: More connected phones than computers in key markets, says Google

There are obvious stats, bizarre ones, and then the good old informative ones. New data from Google revealed by Ad Age, falls into the latter category. According to Goog's numbers, more people have a mobile internet-capable device than a PC or laptop in the five key markets it tested (US, UK, Germany, France and Japan). In the US, this figure is nearly 10% more, some 76% against 68%. The numbers were taken in September and October last year, which means any impact Christmas may have had won't be taken into account. The trend away from featurephones towards smartphones is also drilled home, but that won't be news to many people 'round these parts. No matter how you connect these days, any savvy netizen will tell you: it's quality, not quantity that counts anyway.

Stat Alert: More connected phones than computers in key markets, says Google originally appeared on Engadget on Wed, 25 Jan 2012 09:56:00 EDT. Please see our terms for use of feeds.

PSU's O'Brien: An 'honor' to follow Paterno

STATE COLLEGE, Pa. (AP) ? Bill O'Brien says it's an honor to follow the late Joe Paterno as Penn State's next head coach.

In an interview Monday, O'Brien says he will create his own identity and that no one will ever replace Paterno, who won 409 games and two national championships.

Paterno died Sunday at age 85 just 65 days after his son Scott said his father had been diagnosed with lung cancer.

O'Brien says he never got to speak with Paterno in person following his hiring Jan. 7.

The two did talk by phone soon after O'Brien arrived. O'Brien says he wanted Paterno to know he would work hard to preserve the traditions of winning and academics in the new Penn State regime.

British skier sets record for solo Antarctic trek

FILE - In this Nov. 19, 2011 file photo provided by the Kaspersky ONE Trans-antarctic Expedition, Felicity Aston takes a picture of herself at Union Glacier days before she traveled to her starting point on the Ross Ice Shelf for a solo trek across Antarctica. Aston, 34, crossed Antarctica in 59 days, pulling two sledges for more than 1,084 miles (1,744 kilometers) from the Leverett Glacier to the Hercules Inlet on the Ronne Ice Shelf. On Monday morning, Jan. 23, 2012, she tweeted that she has completed her journey. (AP Photo/Kaspersky ONE Trans-antarctic Expedition/Kaspersky Lab, File)

(AP) ? British adventurer Felicity Aston completed her crossing of Antarctica on Monday, becoming the first woman to ski across the icy continent alone.

She did it in 59 days, pulling two sledges for 1,084 miles (1,744 kilometers) from her starting point on the Leverett Glacier on Nov. 25.

"!!!Congratulations to the 1st female to traverse Antarctica SOLO.V proud," her Twitter message said.

She announced her achievement from Hercules Inlet on Antarctica's Ronne Ice Shelf, where she waited alone in her tent for bad weather to clear so that a small plane could pick her up and take her to a base camp. Other expeditions also have gathered there, preparing for the summer's last flight off the continent.

Aston also set another record: the first human to ski solo, across Antarctica, using only her own muscle power. A male-female team already combined to ski across Antarctica without kites or machines to pull them across, but Aston is the first to do this alone.

A veteran of expeditions in sub-zero environments, Aston, 34, worked as a meteorologist in Antarctica and has led teams on ski trips in the Antarctic, the Arctic and Greenland.

Her journey took her from the Ross Ice Shelf, up the Leverett Glacier and across the Transantarctic Mountains to the continent's vast central plateau, where she fought headwinds most of the way to the South Pole. Then she turned toward Hercules Inlet and a base camp where the Antarctic Logistics and Expeditions company provides logistical support to each summer's Antarctic expeditions.

She arranged in advance for two supply drops so that she could travel with a lighter load, one at the pole and one partway toward her final destination. Otherwise, her feat was unassisted.

Aston tweeted that she's been promised red wine and a hot shower after she gets picked up. "No plane tonight but I have my last Beef and Ale Stew to enjoy for my final evening alone ? yum!" she wrote.

And while she pondered her achievement in her last hours of solitude Monday, she shared more of her thoughts in a phone call she broadcast live online.

"It's all a little bit overwhelming. After days and days to get here, I seem to have arrived all in a rush. I don't really feel prepared for it. It feels amazing to be finished and yet overwhelmingly sad that it's over at the same time," she said. "I can't quite believe that i'm here and that i've crossed Antarctica, just over 1700 kilometers, just under 1,000 nautical miles, 14.5 degrees and 59 days and here I am."

"I'm just going to sit here and enjoy these last precious moments on my own, and running through my mind all those days behind me, the plane leaving me on my own ... the awful day when I thought I was going to get blown away, all those days of bad weather, slogging through those mountains, up those hills with my sledges, arriving at the pole, leaving the pole again, more bad weather and just empty horizons..."

"I remember all the bad times, sitting in my tent, thinking 'what on Earth am I doing?', but despite all that, this has been the most amazing privilege, to have the opportunity to do this, and just a huge thank you to all those people who made it possible."

China: Overseas groups distort truth about unrest (AP)

BEIJING ? China on Tuesday accused overseas advocacy groups of twisting the truth about unrest in a politically sensitive Tibetan region in order to undermine the government.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Hong Lei said order has been restored in Luhuo county in southwestern China after a clash Monday between police and Tibetans that left one Tibetan dead and four others injured.

Five police were also injured in the clash, Hong said. He called the Tibetans involved in the violence in Sichuan province's Ganzi prefecture a "mob" and said authorities will act firmly to fight crime and maintain order.

"Overseas forces of 'Tibet independence' have always fabricated rumors and distorted the truth to discredit the Chinese government with issues involving Tibet," Hong said in remarks carried by the official Xinhua News Agency.

The unrest comes amid high tensions following the self-immolations of at least 16 Buddhist monks, nuns and other Tibetans in the past year. Most have chanted for Tibetan freedom and the return of their spiritual leader, the Dalai Lama, who fled to India amid an abortive uprising against Chinese rule in 1959.

Ganzi is a rugged, deeply Buddhist region filled with monasteries that has been at the center of dissent for years. It is among the traditionally Tibetan areas of Sichuan province and other parts of western China that have been closed to outsiders for months amid a massive security presence.

Tibet activist groups and witnesses said police opened fire on protesters in Monday's violence in Luhuo. The London-based International Campaign for Tibet said three Tibetans were killed and nine wounded, while another group, Free Tibet, said one died and up to 30 others were shot and wounded in Luhuo, also known as Draggo in Tibetan.

A Tibetan monk from Shouling monastery in Luhuo said in a phone interview that police fired at about 10,000 protesters, killing one Tibetan farmer and injuring 32.

"The protesters just want peace and religious freedom," said the monk who would not give his name out of fear of government retaliation. He said the demonstrators were mostly local Tibetan residents plus a few monks and Han Chinese residents.

"Today it is quiet here, but we can see police patrolling around the government offices and the monasteries," he said.

Tuesday was a holiday for the Lunar New Year and calls to the local government and Communist Party offices rang unanswered.

Xinhua said more than 100 people, including monks, gathered to attack a police station after hearing rumors that three monks would set themselves on fire.

It said some were armed with knives and hurled stones as they smashed two police vehicles and two fire engines and stormed nearby shops.

In a sign of the government's sensitivity over the unrest, state-controlled domestic media did not report it. Hong's remarks were carried only by Xinhua's English-language service and were not posted on the Foreign Ministry's website.

Many Tibetans resent Beijing's heavy-handed rule and the large-scale migration of China's ethnic Han majority to the Himalayan region. While China claims Tibet has been under its rule for centuries, many Tibetans say the region was functionally independent for most of that time.

Newt Gingrich's Success Entertains Democrats (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | There is a doctored Washington Post front page making the rounds on Facebook with an image of President Barack Obama laughing with the headline "Gingrich Wins S.C. Primary." Clearly this is not a real headline from The Post, but it has probably been seen by even more people than if it were.

The reason so many people are sharing this faux front page is because it mimics exactly how many Democrats felt when they heard that Newt Gingrich handily beat Mitt Romney in last week's primary in South Carolina. Seriously; do Republicans really think that Gingrich is their best option? Are the pigs flying or do these folks just have their head buried extra deep along their lovely coastline?

As a Democrat, I have watched the Republican primaries with interest. Even though I will not be participating in the vote for the Republican nominee, it is important to me to be knowledgeable regarding the candidates as one of them will be running for the office of President.

It seemed clear early on that Mitt Romney would be the most formidable opponent for President Obama. Romney is conservative, but not so conservative that he would turn off independents. With so many people concerned about the economy, Romney has a wealth of real-world business experience that would seem to make him particularly qualified to deal with economic issues and possibly lead our country down the road to prosperity. He has been married to the same woman for many years, and seems to have raised a lovely family.

So, why, oh why, are so many Republicans choosing Newt Gingrich? Are they poorly informed or just dim? Newt Gingrich claims to have strong family values, but he is currently married to his third wife, who he began relations with while still married to his second wife, who he asked to marry him while he was still married to his first wife, who was battling cancer at the time. Is this a man that people actually believe puts a priority on family values?

Based on a 1997 ethics report, Newt Gingrich was sanctioned by an overwhelming bipartisan vote which forced him to pay back $300,000 in costs due to ethics violations. Gingrich later stepped down as Speaker of the House when he was told that as many as 30 Republicans would refuse to vote for him on the floor of the House. Those were members of his own party, Republicans, who refused his leadership of the House. Yet some people think he would make a good president?

The Republicans that are working to make Newt Gingrich the Republican nominee, if successful, will be handing President Obama his second term on a silver platter. As Republican political consultant Mike Murphy said on Meet the Press this Sunday, "Newt Gingrich cannot carry a general election swing state it if was made of feathers." He's exactly right, and the heads of Republicans leaders are spinning.

The reasons Mitt Romney would appeal to many who don't vote strictly along party lines are the same reasons he isn't conservative enough for tea party Republicans. However Newt Gingrich isn't the guy they are looking for, he's just pretending to be. Gingrich is the dream Republican nominee from a Democrat's perspective. It is truly astonishing that those who are voting for him are blind to this.

Protesters storm Libyan government HQ in Benghazi (Reuters)

BENGHAZI, Libya (Reuters) ? Protesters stormed the Benghazi headquarters of Libya's ruling National Transitional Council (NTC) Saturday while its chairman was still in the building.

People in Benghazi, birthplace of the revolt which forced out former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi, have been protesting for weeks to demand the sacking of Gaddafi-era officials and more transparency about how the NTC is spending Libyan assets.

The attack is a serious blow to the self-appointed but internationally recognized NTC, and underscores growing discontent over the way it is running the country.

Many of those who fought in the nine-month civil war that ended with the capture and killing of Gaddafi in October are unhappy with cash compensations promised by the government, saying it does not cover their basic needs.

On a Saturday, hundreds of young men, many wounded from the war, rallied outside the NTC's headquarters.

When Abdul Jalil, NTC chairman, came out in an attempt to address the crowd, some protesters hurled empty plastic bottles at him, prompting security forces to fire tear gas.

"Go away, Go away," the protesters chanted as Abdul Jalil spoke. He then went back into the building but he is believed to have been pulled to safety from a back door when the crowd charged into the building.

SPOILS OF WAR

Protesters threw stones and metal bars at the building, breaking its windows, before storming the headquarters. One protester left the building carrying a set of loudspeakers and screaming: "Spoils of war!"

Angry protesters also damaged a Toyota Land Cruiser used by Abdul Jalil.

"A large number of wounded people were unhappy because the National (Transitional) Council has not met their demands," said 30-year-old Tareq al-Gheryani as he watched people attacking the NTC's headquarters.

"People are not happy with the council because it has also given government posts to people who are known to have links with Gaddafi."

Interim government officials say it is impossible for them sack hundreds of officials merely because they served under Gaddafi, but stress that those proved to have been involved in human rights abuses or financial fraud will be fired.

The NTC is grappling with problems, including the disbanding of dozens of powerful militias that effectively control the country. The ministries of interior and defense want to integrate them into a military and police force, but militia chiefs have shown little interest in surrendering their arms.

Thursday, Abdul Hafiz Ghoga, vice president of the NTC, was roughed up by university students in Benghazi. He was surrounded by a crowd and jostled before he was pulled away to safety.

Mitt vs Newt Ham House Showdown averted (Reuters)

GREENVILLE, South Carolina (Reuters) ? A Ham House Showdown between Mitt Romney and Newt Gingrich was averted Saturday, but not without them aiming a few shots at each other.

Both Republican presidential candidates had arranged campaign events for the same time in the same place - Tommy's Country Ham House - the day of the South Carolina primary vote.

But Romney arrived 45 minutes earlier than scheduled at the Greenville restaurant and avoided a face-to-face Election Day encounter with Gingrich, whose bus rolled up to the eatery just after Romney's left.

"I have a question. Where's Mitt?" Gingrich said of the former Massachusetts governor, telling the crowd, "I don't think they have New England clam chowder on the menu."

A Gingrich aide declared of Romney's early arrival: "They blinked."

But a Romney aide said Romney's previous event ended sooner than expected and he wanted to go early to Tommy's Country Ham House, a popular destination for political candidates who can talk up voters over breakfasts of ham, eggs, grits and the like.

"We see Newt all the time. We don't get to see the voters of South Carolina every day," the aide said.

Supporters of each candidate waved signs and shouted as Romney arrived early. It was part of the frenzy of campaigning as South Carolina voted in its primary election with Gingrich gunning for an upset over Romney.

The crowd was so thick that some people were almost knocked over by the surge of news media surrounding Romney and pushing its way through people wanting to see the candidate.

Romney stood on a chair to speak and, referring to Gingrich, asked whether "we need a Washington insider to run Washington."

"I'm the only guy's who's spent his life in the real world," Romney said.

Romney could not make his way through the masses, so he climbed onto a table and walked over it to get to voters on another side of the restaurant.

He walked through the restaurant shaking hands, signing campaign posters and even a baseball.

Mike Diruscio was at a table with a Romney poster on it. A Romney supporter?

"Not necessarily," he said. "I don't know yet ... I'm leaning toward Gingrich, because he's got the spunk, he's got the fire."

Sitting at a table was Jeanne Pyle. Who did she come to see?

"We came here for breakfast, but we haven't been served yet," she said.

China factories see sluggish start in 2012: HSBC PMI (Reuters)

BEIJING (Reuters) ? China's factory activity likely fell for a third successive month in January, suggesting Beijing's pro-growth policies will remain in place despite early signs that the downward drift is slowing, a survey of purchasing managers showed on Friday.

The HSBC flash manufacturing purchasing managers index (PMI), the earliest indicator of China's industrial activity, stood at 48.8 in January, a three-month high and a slight improvement on the 48.7 final reading of the December index.

Turnarounds in sub-indexes measuring new export orders, backlogs of work and stocks of finished goods were all signs of strengthening activity, though the overall reading stayed below the 50 level -- which demarcates expansion from contraction -- where it has languished for most of the last seven months.

New orders overall ticked to a three-month high, but failed by a narrow margin to get back above the 50 level.

Areas of concern for investors linger beside the bright spots though, with the overall output index signaling contraction at a faster rate in January than December -- a trend also reflected in the stocks and quantities of purchases.

"The most vulnerable firms are the all-important, highly externalized ones in the manufacturing sector -- especially the smaller firms, which the HSBC flash is weighted towards," Jeremy Stevens, China economist with Standard Bank in Beijing said.

"These smaller firms have long tentacles reaching deeply into the broader economy. The data confirms that many have been forced into lock-down mode, favoring cash preservation over revenue generation," he wrote in a note to clients.

Deteriorating demand from China's biggest trading partners in the European Union and the United States helped drag growth in the world's second-biggest economy down to its lowest in 2-1/2 years in the final quarter of 2011.

The new export orders sub-index, however, managed to bounce to 51.1 from a three-month low.

That followed a run of recent official data that showed a surprising uptick in industrial output growth to 12.8 percent in December 2011 from a year ago and a year-on-year 18.1 percent jump in retail sales.

But official data has also shown a fall in fixed asset investment growth and a further slowdown in the rate of property investment that has been a key driver of economic expansion.

Elsewhere in Asia, Japanese manufacturers remained pessimistic about business conditions for the second straight month in January amid Europe's debt crisis and the slowing global outlook, a Reuters poll showed on Friday.

But manufacturing sentiment is seen bottoming out over the next three months, according to the poll.

SLOWER GROWTH, POLICY ACTION

The PMI survey did nothing to turn Qu Hongbin, chief China economist at HSBC, from the view that more fine-tuning of economic policy should be expected from the Chinese government.

"The third consecutive below-50 reading of the manufacturing PMI suggested that growth is likely to moderate further," he said in a statement accompanying the index.

"Despite the upside surprise of industrial production growth in December, the ongoing slowdown of investment and exports implies more headwinds to growth and likely destocking pressures for manufacturers in the coming months. We expect more policy easing to stabilize growth," Qu said.

Economists forecast a fifth-successive quarter of slower Chinese GDP growth in the first three months of 2012, easing further from the 8.9 percent of Q4 2011. Many expect the year ahead to deliver the slowest overall growth in a decade.

The pullback in activity has fuelled expectations that the government will take more forceful measures to bolster growth and save jobs, beyond the so-called fine-tuning it began to implement in October, in the face of a festering European debt crisis and a sharp slowdown in the domestic property sector.

Beijing reduced the amount of cash that banks have to hold as reserves in November for the first time in three years in a bid to shore up cooling economic activity and maintain a steady supply of credit to companies and consumers.

That 50 basis point cut to 21 percent is forecast by economists to be followed by up to 200 bps more throughout the course of 2012, a Reuters poll showed on Thursday.

The January readings from the HSBC flash PMI -- based on up to 90 percent of total responses to a monthly survey -- are likely to have been muddied by the Lunar New Year holidays, which occur earlier than usual in 2012.

Genetically Engineered Stomach Microbe Converts Seaweed into Ethanol

News | Energy & Sustainability

A genetically modified strain of common gut bacteria may lead to a new technology for making biofuels that does not compete with food crops for arable acreage

brown-seaweed-harvestSEAWEED TO BIOFUEL: Brown seaweed grows fast, is chock full of sugars to turn into biofuel and doesn't compete for land with food crops. Image: Courtesy of BioArchitecture Lab

Seaweed may well be an ideal plant to turn into biofuel. It grows in much of the two thirds of the planet that is underwater, so it wouldn't crowd out food crops the way corn for ethanol does. Because it draws its own nutrients and water from the sea, it requires no fertilizer or irrigation. Most importantly for would-be biofuel-makers, it contains no lignin?a strong strand of complex sugars that stiffens plant stalks and poses a big obstacle to turning land-based plants such as switchgrass into biofuel.

Researchers at Bio Architecture Lab, Inc., (BAL) and the University of Washington in Seattle have now taken the first step to exploit the natural advantages of seaweed. They have built a microbe capable of digesting it and converting it into ethanol or other fuels or chemicals. Synthetic biologist Yasuo Yoshikuni, a co-founder of BAL, and his colleagues took Escherichia coli, a gut bacterium most famous as a food contaminant, and made some genetic modifications that give it the ability to turn the sugars in an edible kelp called kombu into fuel. They report their findings in the January 20 issue of the journal Science.

To get his E. coli to digest kombu, Yoshikuni turned to nature?specifically, he looked into the genetics of natural microbes that can break down alginate, the predominant sugar molecule in the brown seaweed. "The form of the sugar inside the seaweed is very exotic," Yoshikuni told Scientific American. "There is no industrial microbe to break down alginate and convert it into fuels and chemical compounds."

Once he and his colleagues had isolated the genes that would confer the required traits, they used a fosmid?a carrier for a small chunk of genetic code?to place the DNA into the E. coli cells, where it took its place in the microbe's own genetic instruction set. To test the new genetically engineered bacterium, the researchers ground up some kombu, mixed it with water and added the altered E. coli. Before two days had gone by the solution contained about 5 percent ethanol and water. It also did this at (relatively) low temperatures between 25 and 30 degrees Celsius, both of which mean that the engineered microbe can turn seaweed to fuel without requiring the use of additional energy for the process.

An analysis from the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (pdf) suggests that the U.S. could supply 1 percent of its annual gasoline needs by growing such seaweed for harvest in slightly less than 1 percent of the nation's territorial waters. Humans already grow and harvest some 15 million metric tons of kombu and other seaweeds to eat. And there's no reason to fear the newly engineered E. coli escaping into the wild and consuming the seaweed already out there, Yoshikuni argues. "E. coli loves the human gut, it doesn't like the ocean environment," he says. "I can hardly imagine it would do something. It would just be dead."

The microbe could turn out to be useful for making molecules other than ethanol, such as isobutanol or even the precursors of plastics, Yoshikuni says. "Consider the microbe as the chassis with engineered functional modules," or pathways to produce a specific molecule, Yoshikuni says. "If we integrate other pathways instead of the ethanol pathway, this microbe can be a platform for converting sugar into a variety of molecules."

Beckinsale poised to kick butt with "Underworld: Awakening" (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? In this weekend's battle between two butt-kicking women for the box office supremacy, the advantage should go to the vampire.

Kate Beckinsale's "Underworld: Awakening" is expected to triumph over Relativity's "Haywire," starring Mixed Martial Arts badass Gina Carano as a black ops superagent-gone-rogue, and the rest of the box-office competition, which includes Fox's "Red Tails," about African American pilots during World War II, and an expansion of Warners' "Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close" 9-11 drama.

With only a handful of female-driven action films opening in any given year, it's unusual to see two of them opening against each other. The double dose had at least one rival perplexed. "I don't get it," one veteran producer told TheWrap Thursday.

Sony and Relativity, however, believe their films can each find an audience.

But in terms of weekend bragging rights, it's all but certain that Sony's fourth "Underworld" will come out on top at the domestic box office. The first "Underworld" movie, in 2003, opened to $21.8 million. The second and third, in January 2006 and January 2009, respectively, opened to $26.9 million and $20.8 million.

Sony figures "Underworld" will take $20 million to $22 million -- in line with outside expectations. Some rival-studio executives think the movie could gross as much as $24 million.

The movie, which cost $70 million to make, is part of a strong franchise, and despite its low, 29 percent Rotten Tomatoes rating, is showing strong numbers. The 3D movie will open at 3,078 locations.

If the tracking is right, Beckinsale will go from the No. 1 movie in America last week to the No. 1 movie in America this weekend. She stars with Mark Wahlberg in Universal's "Contraband," which grossed an impressive $24.5 million last weekend, and could make a run for the No. 2 spot.

"Haywire," directed by Steven Soderbergh, is expected to finish well behind "Underworld" and "Red Tails" despite a cast that includes Michael Douglas, Ewan McGregor, Michael Fassbender, Antonio Banderas, Channing Tatum and Bill Paxton in addition to Carano.

Fox's PG-13 "Red Tails," which opens in 2,512 locations, looks like the No. 2 movie for the weekend, as long as it can fend off "Contraband" in its second weekend. Box office watchers expect the action-adventure film about the Tuskegee Airmen -- African American pilots in World War II -- to take in as much as $15 million, though Fox is saying it expects $8 million to $10 million.

Anthony Hemingway directed the movie, which stars Terrence Howard, Cuba Gooding Jr. and Bryan Cranston. Although the movie, which cost an estimated $58 million to make, is projected for second place, its Rotten Tomatoes ranking is a weak 29 percent.

But its NRG numbers are fairly strong: 57 percent of moviegoers are aware of the movie and 40 percent report "definite" interest in seeing it.

The numbers are particularly high among men: 64 percent of men younger than 25 and 70 percent of those 25 and older report awareness of the movie.

"Haywire" opens at 2,440 locations with has the highest Rotten Tomatoes score of anything opening this weekend -- 84 percent. But Relativity has modest expectations for the movie. Relativity would be happy with an $8 million opening. That's because although the film was made for $23 million, after tax rebates and other incentives, Relativity's exposure is about $1.5 million, an individual close to the project told TheWrap.

NRG says that "Haywire" has slightly better overall awareness than "Red Tails" -- 59 percent compared to 57 percent, but the number of moviegoers who say they have "definite" interest in seeing the film is the lowest of any movie opening this weekend -- 34 percent.

The studio hopes is that word-of-mouth builds for the movie, and that it will have solid holds over the next few weeks.

"Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close" expands from six to 2,360 locations this weekend. It is expected to gross somewhere around $12 million.

The movie, starring Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock, has already taken about $671,500. "Extremely Loud," directed by Stephen Daldry, has a Rotten Tomatoes score of 49 percent.

NRG reports that 72 percent of moviegoers are aware of it. The movie has particular appeal to women older than 25: 52 percent of that demographic report "definite" interest in seeing the movie and 19 percent say it is their "first choice."

On the specialty front, the Weinstein Co. is debuting "Coriolanus," starring Gerard Butler and directed by Ralph Fiennes, at nine locations. The movie, based on the Shakespeare play, spent a week in theaters in December to qualify for Academy Awards.

Weinstein also is expanding its Golden Globe-winning "The Artist," from 216 to 662 locations. The silent, black-and-white movie is a strong contender for Academy Awards.

Wreckin Hill is opening "The Flowers of War," a Chinese film starring Christian Bale, at 30 locations. "Flowers" was considered a contender for best foreign language Oscar, but director Zhang Yimou's film did not make the shortlist. It is the most expensive Chinese movie ever made, and was the country's highest-grossing movie of 2011.

According to the audience tracking firm NRG Research, 66 percent of moviegoers are aware of "Flowers of War" and 41 percent have "definite" interest in seeing it. The figures are strongest for young men, 49 percent of whom report "definite" interest in seeing the movie. Among men 25 and older, that number is 46 percent.

Previous NASA Space Vehicles Named from Student Contests (ContributorNetwork)

The student contest to name the twin GRAIL probes, recently won by a fourth grade class at Emily Dickinson Elementary School in Bozeman, Montana, is just the latest NASA sponsored competition to name a spaceship.

1988 -- Space Shuttle Endeavour

The United States authorized the construction of a new space shuttle orbiter to replace the Challenger, which was destroyed during its launch on Jan. 26, 1986. NASA offered a competition to name the new orbiter which received more than 6,000 entries. The entries had to be the name of an exploration ship appropriate to NASA's mission. The winning entry was Endeavour, submitted by students at the McCall-Donnelly Elementary School in McCall, Idaho. Endeavour was a ship sailed by Royal Navy Capt. James Cooke in a voyage of exploration in the Pacific in the 1700s.

1994 -- Sojourner Truth Mars Rover

In 1994, the Planetary Society in partnership with NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory started a nation-wide student contest to name the tiny rover to be deployed by the Mars Pathfinder lander. Valerie Ambroise, 12, of Bridgeport, CT submitted the winning essay, suggesting the name of "Sojourner Truth," after an African American abolitionist of the Civil War era. "Sojourner" is another name for traveler.

1998 -- Terra Earth Probe

A contest to name the EOS AM-1 probe, designed to measure climate and environmental change on Earth. The winning name of Terra was submitted by Sasha Jones, then a 12th Grader from St Louis, Missouri. Jones, in her essay, stated that Terra was the name of the most beautiful woman ever, as the planet is the source of food, water, air, and even lessons taught through its fury.

2003 -- Spirit and Opportunity Mars Rovers

The contest to name the two Mars Exploration Rovers was sponsored by NASA and the Lego Company. The two Mars rovers, which have been operating on the Martian surface since landing in early 2004, were named by then nine year old Sofi Collins, a Siberian born orphan who was adopted by an American couple and was brought to the United States at the age of two. Spirit and Opportunity were judged to be characteristics necessary in the pursuit of exploration.

2009 -- Curiosity Mars Rover

Formally known as the Mars Science Laboratory, the Curiosity rover is now en route to Mars with a projected August landing date. A contest to name the car sized rover was co-sponsored by NASA and Disney-Pixar's animated film "WALL-E." Twelve-year-old Clara Ma from the Sunflower Elementary school in Lenexa, Kansas submitted the winning entry from over 9000 proposals. Ms. Ma wrote, in her essay, that curiosity is "--an everlasting flame that burns in everyone's mind."
