The Biggest Conflicts Created By The Most Massive Ad Company ...

When a major marketer chooses to spend hundreds of millions of dollars with a certain ad agency, it usually doesn't expect its arch rival to be housed under the same roof.

But after holding companies Omnicom and Publicis announced its surprise merger Sunday, making it the biggest ad entity in the world, the world couldn't help but notice that huge nemeses had overnight become part of the same family. Pepsi and Coke. AT&T and Verizon. Apple and Google.

Omnicom CEO John Wren adamantly stated that he was not concerned about conflicts of interest.

"We're going to work extremely hard with our clients over problems and try to come up with creative solutions," he said."But at this point, if the deal is completed, there is ? I don't believe, a significant client ... no single client would be significant enough to disturb the deal."

As holding companies have gotten bigger, and conflicts more common, they have come up with creative ways to retain conflicted business. Accounts can be split by geography or by agency, with "firewalls" between them. It's up to the client to trust that the splits are done in good faith, however.

According to the Wall Street Journal, "One analyst said he has heard several times from executives, generally, that if two top ad agencies combined they should expect to lose about 8% to 10% of combined revenues because of conflict clients." Wren thinks the biggest loss would be 1% of revenues.

Since some huge companies with boatloads of different products, like Procter & Gamble, already had different goods living in both Publicis and Omnicom, the merger won't be dramatic for some major clients. But for companies that don't like competition ? S.C. Johnson historically hates conflict ? the partnership could be problematic.

Here are some of the biggest conflicts:

SODA

  • Coca-Cola (Publicis' Leo Burnett) vs. PepsiCo. (Omnicom's TBWA)

Pepsi's entire ad campaign in the 1970's and 80's revolved around the Pepsi Challenge, which had a sole purpose of proving that consumers liked drinking Pepsi more than Coke. The fact that the two rivals will now be living under the same roof is by far the biggest conflict created by the merger.?

Ad Age wonders if WPP and Interpublic, two separate holding companies that have both worked with Coca-Cola, might have the ability to steal away the soda.

WIRELESS PROVIDERS

  • AT&T (Omnicom) vs. Verizon (Publicis)

In fact, almost every telecom company (AT&T, Sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon) will now be under Publicis Omnicom Goupe's creative control if no one moves.

TECHNOLOGY

  • Apple and Microsoft (Omnicom) vs. Samsung and Google (Publicis)

BEER

  • MillerCoors's Miller Light (Publicis' Saatchi & Saatchi) vs. Anheuser-Busch's Bud Light (Omnicom's BBDO)

A-B InBev, however, isn't concerned and has different labels with each holding company.?"It doesn't change anything related to agency conflict," VP of marketing Paul Chibe told Ad Age in an email. "The holding-company approach is to have different network shops to manage potential conflicts. That doesn't change in the event of a merger. We work with Publicis and Omnicom agencies in many countries."

AUTOMOBILES

  • There's a lot of car overlap between the company, although the divergences could still result in conflict. Nissan, General Motors, Toyota, and Volkswagen all have business in both holding companies, Ad Age reports.

A Nissan spokesperson told Reuters,?"Renault and Nissan are both major global clients of both Publicis and Omnicom. We welcome the direction taken by Publicis and Omnicom to create a best-in-class communications, advertising, marketing and digital services company and will continue to work with them."

BMW sales chief Ian Robertson, on the other hand, was less optimistic. "Ideally, clearly we (would) have that independence from other manufacturers," he said. "But in a world which is now connected and there are so many mergers of this type, maybe that's something that is not an ideal position."

US government will declassify Yahoo documents and court decision by September

DNP US government will declassify Yahoo FISA documents by September

Earlier this month, the US government was put in the hot seat with regards to the Justice Department's 2008 battle with Yahoo over its request for user data. Yahoo fought the PRISM demand and ultimately lost; five years later, we're finally going to be able to see the court decision that's been kept under lock and key since then. The clock is ticking for the federal government, as the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court has set a September deadline for unveiling those classified documents. While this might be a victory for transparency, it's important to remember that declassification doesn't necessarily mean full disclosure. The government will still have the option to redact certain portions of text that it feels must remain classified. Considering its reticence to share the information in the first place, we can probably expect to see a liberal distribution of those pesky black rectangles.

CBS renews Stephen King sci-fi series 'Under the Dome'

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - "Under the Dome," the television science-fiction series based on a Stephen King novel, has been renewed for a second season, U.S. broadcast network CBS said on Monday.

The series, which chronicles the life of a small town that is cut off from the outside world by a giant impenetrable dome, has attracted an average of about 12 million viewers per episode, making it the top scripted series of the summer in the United States.

King, whose novel of the same name was published in 2009, will write the first episode of the second season, which will premiere next summer, CBS said.

King serves as an executive producer of the series along with Oscar-winning director Steven Spielberg.

Programming - MSFN

Hello everyone

?

For as long as I can remember I've always liked IT and computer technology, especially software.

?

I now use computers more like a hobby-thing, but I would love to work in the IT-world one day.

?

I've been wondering whether I would like to work as a Sys-Admin or a programmer and came to the conclusion that programming would be my thing. Why? Because I want to CREATE. It's amazing that you can create something by writing code.

?

However, the thing is. I have NO programming skills whatsoever. But I would love to learn.

Where do I start? How did you start? Are you a self-learnd programmer or did you go to collage/university? Is it really neccesary to get a degree in programming if you want to work as a programmer?

?

Again - where do I begin? I'm a complete beginner and wan't a soft start.

?

Looking forward to here from you! :)

?

Sorry for my english!

?

Thanks

Egypt bitterly divided after 72 die in clashes

Amr Abdallah Dalsh / Reuters

A member of the Muslim Brotherhood and supporter of deposed Egyptian President Mohamed Mursi walks near a Poster of Mursi and bloodstains from protesters who were killed during late night clashes at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier, near Rabaa Adawiya Square, Saturday.

By Charlene Gubash and Alastair Jamieson, NBC News

CAIRO - Egyptians remained deeply divided over the future of their country Sunday, with no sign of an end to clashes between rivals groups that left at least 72 dead on Saturday.

Supporters of the Muslim Brotherhood said they would not leave the streets despite what they called "massacres" by security forces that shot dozens of them dead.

The spiral of violence has become so bad that Secretary of State John Kerry said Egypt is at "a pivotal moment" more than two years since the uprising ousted the longtime President Hosni Mubarak.

In a statement released Saturday, Kerry said Egypt?s military and interim rulers "have a moral and legal obligation" to respect the right of peaceful assembly and freedom of expression.

He added that the continued violence sets back efforts of "reconciliation and democratization," and affects regional stability.

Also on Saturday, Secretary of Defense Chuck Hagel spoke by phone with Army chief Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Sisi to express deep concern about the security situation and to encourage that restraint be exercised during this "difficult period."

"The United States believes that the current transition needs to be marked by inclusivity, that Egyptian authorities should avoid politicized arrests and detentions, and take steps to prevent further bloodshed and loss of life," Pentagon press secretary George Little said.

Egypt's ambulance service said 72 people were killed in Saturday's violence at a Cairo vigil by backers of deposed President Mohammed Morsi, Reuters reported.

"They will not be content until they bring back everything from the era of the corrupt, murderous security and intelligence state," senior Brotherhood official Essam el-Erian said on Facebook. "They've stepped up their efforts to do so by committing massacres never before seen in Egyptian history."

The Interior Ministry has rejected eyewitness accounts that police opened fire on the crowds and a public prosecutor has launched a probe into the violence, investigating 72 suspects for an array of crimes including murder and blocking streets, Reuters said.

Opinion remains bitterly divided about the violence, and who is to blame.

?What happened violates all religions, laws and common practices,? said Ahmed Farouk, 43, a scientific researcher. ?The police and military have all the tools at their disposal to prove their innocence.?

/

Deadly protests continue weeks after the nation's military removed the president from office.

?Every action has a reaction,? he added. ?Who did the first action??

Omayma Idriss, a gynecologist in his 50s, described Morsi supporters as ?terrorists? and said the killings were carried out by their own side. ?Of course, of course, they did it themselves,? he said.

?I wasn't happy with the army,? said Sahar Mohamed, 35. ?We must settle things peacefully.? They should have used tear gas, but never live ammunition.?

Taxi driver Hossam Said, 28, said he did not believe the claims of Muslim Brotherhood supporters who brandished shells as evidence they had been attacked by the army.

"It doesn't make any sense,? he said. ?How can the person who is shooting at you be half a kilometer away and yet you have the shells? I was in the army and the maximum a shell would go is 20 meters.

"I don't know how some in the back would get shot while some in front were not. I don't know who killed them."

When asked if the army and police should clear Egypt?s squares of pro-Morsi protesters, or let them express their views, he said: "What freedom of expression, what do they have to say? They tried and failed."

Reuters contributed to this report.

Ask Engadget: best outdoor TV?

Ask Engadget: best outdoor TV?

We know you've got questions, and if you're brave enough to ask the world for answers, then here's the outlet to do so. This week's Ask Engadget inquiry is from John, who is so baller that he wants a TV for his pool and doesn't end his emails with thank you. If you're looking to ask one of your own, drop us a line at ask [at] engadget [dawt] com.

"I'm getting ready to have a pool installed and I need a TV for the back porch. I'm looking for something in the 50-inch range that works outdoors, has good viewing angles and backlighting (for the sun) and can handle whatever the weather throws at it. Any suggestions?"

We can imagine it now, you, kicking back watching the Superbowl American Idol finals while submerged in a few feet of water as the sun goes down. So, what device should you go for? For starters, there's SunBrite's 46-inch outdoor TV, which'll set you back $2,795, or a 55-inch model, which costs $5,595. You could also paint a wall white and get set up with an outdoor projector, like Panasonic's PT-AE7000U, which we're informed will work outside perfectly well. But that's just our scratching the surface, what about you all chip in with a suggestion or two of your own?

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd makes surprise visit to troops at Tarin Kot base in Afghanistan

Updated July 28, 2013 07:39:44

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and his wife Therese Rein have made a surprise visit to Australian troops in Afghanistan.

Mr Rudd visited the Australian base in Tarin Kot to thank troops for their service.

It was Mr Rudd's fifth visit to the base.

His first came a just a week after he was elected prime minister in 2007.

Mr Rudd told the troops that it had been a hard, protracted war and that it is time for them to come home.

"Your mums and dads, your brothers and sisters, your wives and husbands and partners, and your kids are all enormously proud of you," he said.

"It's time we brought you home.

"When the flag of Australia is brought down for the last time a few months from now, you will have been?a part of history."

Ms Rein said she was proud to have shaken hands with many of the soldiers.

By the end of the year, 1,000 of the remaining 1,300 Australian troops will have returned to Australia.

Some 300 will remain as advisers and trainers based in Kabul and Kandahar.

The Tarin Kot base will be gifted to the Afghan National Army.

Forty Australian soldiers have been killed in Afghanistan since 2002.

Southampton scientists in cancer breakthrough

SOUTHAMPTON scientists have taken a major step closer to developing groundbreaking new treatments for fighting cancer.

Cancer Research UK scientists at the University of Southampton have discovered a new molecule that prevents cancer cells from surviving when they are starved of oxygen.

They believe that the discovery of this molecule which targets the ?master switch? that cancer cells use to adapt to low oxygen levels can pave the way for new treatments.

The next step will be to find a way to utilise this molecule in a treatment which will kill the cancer cells by starving them of oxygen.

The researchers in the city uncovered a way to stop cancer cells using this switch through an approach called ?synthetic biology?.

By testing 3.2m potential compounds, made by specially engineered bacteria, they were able to find a molecule that stopped HIF-1 from working.

All cells need a blood supply to provide them with the oxygen and nutrients they require to survive.

Cancer tumours grow rapidly and as the tumour gets bigger it outstrips the supply of oxygen and nutrients that the surrounding blood vessels can deliver. But, to cope with this low-oxygen environment, HIF-1 acts as a master switch that turns on hundreds of genes, allowing cancer cells to survive.

HIF-1 triggers the formation of new blood vessels around tumours, causing more oxygen and nutrients to be delivered to the starving tumour, which in turn allows it to keep growing.

Dr Ali Tavassoli, a Cancer Research UK scientist whose team discovered and developed the compound at the University of Southampton, said: ?We've found a way to target the steps that cancer cells take to survive and we hope that our research will one day lead to effective drugs that can stop cancers adapting to a low oxygen environment, stopping their growth.

?The next step is to further develop this molecule to create an effective treatment.?

Dr Julie Sharp, senior science information manager at Cancer Research UK, added: ?Finding ways to disrupt the tools that cancer cells use to adapt and grow when starved of oxygen has been a hot topic in cancer research, but finding drugs that do this effectively has proved elusive.

?For the first time our scientists have found a way to block a master switch controlling cells response to low levels of oxygen - an important step towards creating drugs that could halt cancer in its tracks.?

3 dead when bus carrying teens crashes in Indiana

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? A bus carrying teenagers returning to Indiana from a church camp in Michigan crashed Saturday afternoon just minutes from home, killing three people and sending 26 others to hospitals, officials said.

The bus came speeding off of Interstate 465 in northern Indianapolis, about a mile from the Colonial Hills Baptist Church that passengers attended, struck a retaining wall as it rounded a curve and overturned. The campers were returning from Camp CoBeAc in northern Michigan, about six hours away.

The church's youth pastor had sent a tweet a couple of hours before the crash saying the group was expected to arrive at the church about 4:15 p.m., around the time the accident happened.

"They were not that far from home. That only adds to the tragedy," said Indianapolis Public Safety Director Troy Riggs.

The dead included a man and his wife, Riggs said. Authorities did not provide information about the third victim.

Riggs and Mayor Greg Ballard visited the crash scene, where clothing, pillows and seat cushions from the bus were scattered along with at least two shattered windows, before they headed to the church. Riggs said there was no indication that the driver had a medical emergency and called the accident "a great tragedy."

Ballard said investigators were taking measurements and examining the bus to determine the cause of the crash.

WTHR-TV reported the bus driver told witnesses his brakes failed. Indianapolis Fire Department Lt. Ato McTush said police and fire officials had not determined whether the church-owned bus, which was carrying 37 passengers plus the driver, had mechanical issues.

Duane Lloyd told WTHR that he heard a loud noise behind him as he was traveling near the intersection and saw the crash around 4:15 p.m.

"I heard a skid. I looked back. I see this bus in the air and people falling out of the bus," Lloyd said. "I could have gone my whole life without seeing that."

Karen Woodard, a member of Colonial Hills Baptist Church, cried as she stared at the wrecked bus.

"It's so terrible. I can't believe it," she said.

Indianapolis Fire Department said crews had to free five people who were trapped inside after the crash. Several people stopped to help before first responders could arrive, including one man who helped pull the driver out of the bus, the department said.

"People were stopping their cars. People were literally trying to lift the bus," Lloyd said. "You just try to do what you can do."

Fire officials said the injured included children and adults.

Nine teenagers were taken to IU Health Methodist Hospital, including one in critical condition. Three of those were treated and released, hospital spokeswoman Sally Winter said. She said 10 others, including nine teenagers and a toddler, were taken to Riley Hospital for Children. Seven of those teenagers were treated and released, Winter said.

Many of the patients were suffering head, arm and leg injuries, fire officials said.

Roads near the scene were closed, and authorities urged people to use caution in the area. A hazardous materials crew was cleaning up diesel fuel that spilled in the crash.

Outside the church, a yellow school bus with the church school's name was parked outside with piles of sleeping bags and suitcases nearby. Families hugged outside and talked quietly before going inside, where they met with Ballard and Riggs Saturday evening.

Ballard described the families as "remarkably positive" despite their sorrow.

"Some of the teenagers are hurting pretty bad and you can see that in their faces," he said.

Church member Jeff Leffew, 44, of Fishers, who had three daughters on the bus that crashed and a fourth on a second bus, said he was waiting to pick them up in the church parking lot when the second bus arrived. He said he knew immediately that something was wrong because the kids on the bus were screaming.

He went to the crash scene and found his three daughters with only bumps and bruises.

He called the crash scene "surreal."

"You're just praying that it's not as bad as it looks," he said.

Celtics, Nets Top List of NBA Gamblers

Championship contenders are built on calculated risk, just as some of the most lowly, cap-strapped franchises are burned by those very same gambles. Such is the way of it in any industry where the desired resources are so limited. Without enough LeBron Jameses to go around, teams are left to talk themselves into less appealing options at all possible price points, and to compete with one another to acquire them. No matter how much scouting and analysis is done beforehand, the final step in any deal is a plunge ? to commit salary to a player who may fail, may not fit or may suffer some tragic injury.

All is subject to variability and chance, but at the same time not all gambles are created equal. There are wise risks and less sensible ones, sometimes separated by the thinnest...

Canada payrolls show much smaller gain in May than earlier report

OTTAWA (Reuters) - A survey of Canadian businesses showed non-farm payrolls were up just 8,500 in May, less than one tenth of the number released in an early June report that is based on interviews with households.

Thursday's report - the survey of Payroll Employment, Earnings and Hours - obtained data from a business census.

The Labor Force Survey, Canada's most closely watched employment report, showed a gain of 95,000 jobs in May, the biggest monthly gain since August 2002.

Methodological differences bring slightly different results from the two surveys, but usually the trend is similar. Rarely do they contrast so starkly.

The Labour Force Survey can be volatile and economists warn against reading too much into one month's data. On July 5, the survey showed Canada had shed 400 jobs in June.

Virginia Johnson, renowned sex researcher, dies

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? Virginia Johnson, the Missouri farm girl who helped redefine the understanding of human sexuality as half of the husband-wife team whose taboo sex studies in the 1960s turned them into worldwide celebrities and best-selling authors, has died. She was 88.

The pioneering sex researcher died at an assisted living facility in St. Louis on Wednesday after suffering complications from various illnesses, her son Scott Johnson told The Associated Press on Thursday. He said the family was planning a private funeral.

Johnson was in her 30s, a twice-divorced mother of two children, when she went job-hunting at Washington University in St. Louis in the late 1950s, seeking work to support her young family while she pursued a college degree.

She was hired as a secretary at the university's medical school but soon became the assistant and lover of obstetrician-gynecologist William Masters, then co-collaborated on a large-scale human sexuality experiment ? a subject all but taboo at the time.

The couple became known for a revolutionary sexual therapy that brought couples from across the country with sexual dysfunction, including celebrities, to St. Louis for their two-week program.

Masters had impeccable academic and research credentials in infertility and hormone replacement therapy ? but some described him as aloof and austere, often difficult to approach. That's where Johnson came in.

Johnson had a way of putting people at ease, so much so that with "evangelical-like zeal" she figured out how to get volunteers "to drop their pants in the name of science," said author Thomas Maier, who wrote a 2009 book about the couple.

Johnson recruited graduate students, nurses, faculty wives and other participants for what Maier described as the "biggest sex experiment in U.S. history."

The late-hours research, first on the medical school campus and later at a nearby building, shattered basic precepts about female sexuality, including Freud's concept that vaginal ? rather than clitoral ? orgasm was the more mature sexual response for women.

Johnson took the case studies and asked the uncomfortable questions. Hundreds of couples, not all of them married, would participate in the observed research.

"Here's a woman without a college degree who helped to revolutionize medicine's understanding of human sexuality, whose therapies are taught in medical schools in the U.S. and around the world," Maier said in a 2010 interview with The Associated Press.

That research was later discussed in their 1966 book, "Human Sexual Response." And their 1970 book, "Human Sexual Inadequacy," explored a therapy they'd developed for men and women with sexual problems.

Both books were best-sellers translated into dozens of languages.

At the height of their careers, Masters and Johnson were huge celebrities, the topic of late-night talk show hosts and on the cover of news magazines.

They married in 1971 and divorced 20 years later, when Masters left her to pursue a sweetheart from his youth. Johnson never remarried.

Their work had its critics, and it was often frowned upon in some circles in an era when sex was seldom discussed publicly.

"There was a lot of grief," her son said Thursday. "There were threats, things of that kind. She was a very strong woman."

Her attorney, Dave Harlan of St. Louis, echoed those sentiments by describing Johnson as "strong willed, extremely intelligent, extremely independent."

As Masters' health was in decline in the 1990s, and Johnson was caring for him, he announced he was divorcing her. Their facility, the Masters and Johnson Institute in St. Louis, closed in 1994 after Masters retired. He died in 2001.

Scott Johnson said his mother also retired in the early 1990s.

Along with her son, Johnson is survived by her daughter, Lisa Young, and two grandchildren.

BEIJING/SINGAPORE (Reuters) - Revenues from Baidu Inc's mobile services surpassed 10 percent of its quarterly total for the first time in the April-June period, dispelling fears that China's largest Internet search was losing market share to rivals.

Baidu has invested in location-based services, apps and online videos to make money off smartphone users as it looks to diversify its revenue stream and fend off increasingly stiff competition in the search market from rivals like Qihoo 360 Technology Co Ltd.

Investors had not expected these investments to boost revenues so soon, analysts said.

"Baidu said they were monetizing... but that was something the Street didn't factor in for the second quarter and especially for the third quarter," said Michael Clendenin, managing director of China-based advisory firm RedTech Advisors.

Baidu shares rose 12 percent in after-hours trade after it surprised investors with a higher-than-expected revenue forecast of $1.422 billion to $1.46 billion in the third quarter. Its second quarter revenues rose 28 percent from the previous quarter to $1.23 billion, in line with expectations.

"Our investments in mobile are already beginning to bear fruit," Baidu's Chief Financial Officer Jennifer Li told an analysts' briefing. "Mobile revenue for the first time accounts for over 10 percent of total revenue."

The company declined to disclose the percentage of its first-quarter revenues that came from mobile services.

ACQUISITION MANIA

China's mobile Internet market is expected to double to about 300 billion yuan ($48 billion) in 2014 from 150 billion yuan in 2012, with the number of active mobile Internet users rising to 749 million from 521 million during the same period, according to research firm Analysys International.

The growth potential in the mobile market has boosted total acquisitions, inclusive of net debt, in China's Internet sector to $1.6 billion so far this year, which is more than the $1.1 billion in the whole of 2012 and $900 million in 2011, according to Thomson Reuters data.

Potential targets like Sohu.com Inc, Kingsoft Corp Ltd, Jiayuan.com International Ltd and Ctrip.com International Ltd are also enjoying a boost to their valuations.

The average twelve-month forward price-to-earnings ratio for the four companies was 24.35, compared to the Chinese Internet sector's average of 19.24, Thomson Reuters data showed.

Last week, Baidu said it would buy app store 91 Wireless for $1.9 billion from NetDragon Websoft Inc and other shareholders. [ID:nL4N0FM0V5] In May, it said it would buy the online video business of PPS Net TV for $370 million.

Chinese rivals Tencent Holdings Ltd and Alibaba Group are also investing to stimulate revenue growth.

Tencent is eyeing Western game developers to create games for its popular WeChat app, said Steve Grey, an executive in charge of game production.

Alibaba this year bought stakes in Sina Corp's social-networking website Weibo and in navigation and maps firm AutoNavi Holdings Ltd. Qihoo 360, which also has an app store, is in talks to acquire Sohu's search engine in a deal that could give it almost one quarter of China's search market.

"They're all moving in the same direction, but on mobile they don't know what the proven business model is," said Elinor Leung, an analyst at brokerage CLSA. "So the way to do it is do everything and see which works out eventually."

The rush to expand into mobile means some companies may be overpaying for acquisitions, RedTech Advisors' Clendenin said.

He estimates Alibaba paid ten to eleven times Sina Weibo's projected 2014 sales for its share while the cost to Baidu could be 18 to 19 times the projected sales of 91 Wireless.

"With Baidu there wasn't really much left on the table. I think NetDragon knew they had an advantage," Clendenin said.

"They were one of the few girls left at the dance willing to go out with Baidu."

AP names Edelsten to top China editorial position

BEIJING (AP) -- The Associated Press has named veteran Asia-based journalist and video producer Miles Edelsten to the new position of news director for Greater China.

The appointment was announced Wednesday by John Daniszewski, senior managing editor for international news; Sandy MacIntyre, AP's director of global video news; and Santiago Lyon, AP's global director of photography.

"China is undergoing dramatic economic growth while facing development challenges that affect not only its people and region, but the entire world," Daniszewski said. "Edelsten's deep commitment to telling the stories of Asia, his sharp and unerring news judgment and his hands-on leadership style make him a great choice to lead one of the AP's most important bureaus."

Previously AP's video news editor for China, Edelsten will manage AP's coverage in text, photos and video for China, Taiwan and Hong Kong. The appointment is part of a move to better integrate how AP manages the various media formats in its bureaus in Asia and around the world. He will report to Brian Carovillano, the Asia-Pacific news director based in Bangkok, and manage three deputies responsible for coverage in text, photos and video.

"Edelsten is a vastly experienced journalist whose leadership of video teams across Asia on some of the biggest stories of the last decade makes him an ideal choice for this role," MacIntyre said. "He is a born storyteller. Leading our text, photo and video operation in an area which is rich in visually stimulating stories is a challenge he will rise to with aplomb."

Edelsten joined AP Television News in 1998 as a newsroom producer in London. The following year he became AP's senior producer in Tokyo, where he coordinated coverage of every major story in Japan over the next 13 years, including the 2002 World Cup and the 2011 earthquake, tsunami and nuclear crisis. In 2012, Edelsten transferred to Beijing to lead AP's video coverage of China, including the new Chinese leadership and the controversy over cyber-hacking.

Edelsten has also has traveled widely to cover big stories, including the Kosovo war, the SARS epidemic in China, the Iraq War, the 2008 Mumbai terrorist attacks, the 2004 tsunami in Asia and the 2008 U.S. presidential election.

A pivotal moment came on March 11, 2011, with the magnitude 9.0 earthquake off northeast Japan. Images he shot while the Tokyo bureau was still rocking were the first pictures of the disaster seen by many people around the world. He subsequently managed a large team of journalists covering the triple disaster that unfolded over the following weeks, and venturing into the exclusion zone around the Fukushima nuclear plant himself to shoot video of the Robinson Crusoe-like existence of a farmer who had refused to leave.

He was also involved in setting up AP's first video news bureau in Pyongyang, North Korea, in 2006, and has regularly visited on assignment since then.

"Edelsten's talent for compelling storytelling and his experience leading teams on major news events have prepared him well for this important role," Lyon said.

Edelsten began his career as an Asia researcher for a news program on Britain's Channel 4 before going on to study Japanese in Tokyo and join Nippon TV as a producer covering Europe and Africa.

Edelsten, 45, is from Dorset, England. He holds a bachelor's degree from Bristol University and a Masters in the Politics of Asia from The London School of Oriental and African Studies.

The First Instagram Videos Out of North Korea Show an Isolated Otherworld

Just a few months ago, North Korea decided to flip on its 3G network, giving anyone who somehow managed to find access to a phone the ability to Instagram a landscape that comes with its very own sepia-toning. Now, though, thanks to Associated Press photographer David Guttenfelder and reporter Jean Lee, we have the (as far as we know) very first Instagram videos of life inside this esoteric autocracy.

Perk's Reward-Centric Mobile Browser Now Blocks Unwanted Ads

perk-block-adsAustin-based incubator Jutera Labs is putting even more of its weight behind Perk, a rewards-centric mobile web browser that blocks out ads when used on tablets. Perk, which originally started out as a way to give consumers coupons, discounts or airline miles while browsing the web, is now blocking ads. While companies like AdBlock have built up strong web-based businesses with more than 200 million downloads, Perk co-founder Julian Frachtman says that there’s a window of opportunity to do the same thing on tablets, especially as they cannibalize PC usage. The company partners with affiliate networks to give Perk users deals at about 2,000 online stores. Those stores include big brands like Amazon, Target, Best Buy and Starbucks. There are also deals for frequent-flier miles at airlines like Delta, US Airways and Alaska Airlines and charitable donations to non-profits like the American Cancer Society. Users can explicitly opt-in to these rewards, and there’s a shopping icon in the app’s top bar that lets users scroll through different rewards available to them based on points they’ve earned by browsing the web. “When people shop online or when they do research online or take other actions like watch videos and fill out surveys, they can redeem these actions for cash or frequent flier miles,” Frachtman said. He says one advantage of blocking ads is that the browser will load pages faster. The app is still quite small at this point with 5,000 monthly actives, but Frachtman said that once they figure out the lifetime value of a typical Perk user, they can use performance marketing techniques to grow the base. For now, Perk is only available for iOS, but the company plans to bring it to Android in a month-and-a-half. Jutera has raised about $1 million in funding and the company’s employee base is split between Austin, Texas and Bangalore, India.

House GOP to slash environmental, arts funding

(AP) ? House Republicans Monday proposed slashing cuts to environmental programs and funding for the Smithsonian Institution and the arts as they unveiled the latest legislation to implement the second year of budget cuts required under so-called sequestration.

The $24 billion spending measure would gut the budget of the Environmental Protection Agency with a one-third cut and cuts the National Endowments for the Arts by almost half. Overall, the measure funding the Interior Department, EPA, national parks and federal firefighting efforts is cut by 19 percent below funding approved in March.

It takes a more modest approach to the national parks with a slight increase over levels mandated by sequestration, the across-the-board cuts forced by Washington's failure to strike a bipartisan budget accord. And firefighting efforts would benefit from $1.5 billion in "emergency" funds on top of the spending limits set by the GOP's austere budget plan.

The measure is the latest of 12 spending bills for the almost one-third of the federal budget funded each year by Congress in the form of day-to-day operating budgets for government agencies. Such budgets are hit the hardest by sequestration.

Republicans control the House and are insisting on living within a tight $967 billion "cap" on agency operating budgets and are shifting more than $47 billion from domestic programs to the Pentagon ? which runs counter to a 2011 budget agreement. The restoration of money to the Defense Department would force austere cuts on nondefense programs like foreign aid, transit grants and community development grants sought by local officials.

Monday's measure, along with a legislation coming to the floor later this week funding transportation and housing, are two of the GOP bills absorbing the brunt of the domestic cuts, along with a measure funding labor, health and education programs that will be revealed on Wednesday.

"Simply put, this bill makes very difficult choices in an extremely tough budget environment," said author Mike Simpson, R-Idaho. "Within challenging budget constraints, we've focused on providing adequate funding to fight and prevent wildfires, making sure our national parks stay open, and meeting our trust responsibilities to American Indians."

The measure also contains a roster of policy "riders" aimed at reining in the EPA such as language that would prohibit the agency from regulating greenhouse gas emissions from electric utilities.

The bill is sure to be slapped with a White House veto threat and functions as a placeholder until negotiations this fall.

Comic-Con 2013: 'Community' Panel

Community Season 5
NBC

?Community? is back and better than ever, and we?ve got the Dan Harmon to prove it! Sporting cardboard ?Iron Man? armor, the ?Community? creator arrived at the Comic-Con 2013 panel doing his best Tony Stark, leading the cast members in attendance to preview the coming season of NBC?s beloved cult comedy. From syndication to an animated episode, we were on hand to hear everything the Greendale gang had to say about ?Community? season 5!

Once the initical celebrations of Dan Harmon?s return and the show?s season 5 renewal died down, the combined cast of Danny Pudi, Gillian Jacobs, Alison Brie, Jim Rash, and Yvette Nicole Brown took their places on the stage with returning creative minds Dan Harmon and Chris McKenna. Perhaps most importantly, Harmon promised a return to the less over-thought episodes of seasons 1 and 2, with a few concept episodes (animated episode!) thrown in for good measure.

Asked by moderator Chris Hardwick, Harmon previewed ?new levels of anxiety that will no doubt trickle into the show. Nobody wants to not fail more than me at this point, because it?s kind of a weird story. I really really have to make these 13 count. I don?t consider them the last 13. I?m going to do everything I can to get us the sixth season.?

All told, here were the best moments from the ?Community? season 5 panel at Comic-Con 2013, which also revealed Community?s upcoming move into syndication:

  • In describing what the various actors have brought to their roles (Ken Jeong was just a ?get? for the series), Harmon revealed that he hopes to see more of Shirley?s outspoken and idealistic side as a successful businesswoman, mirroring his own occasional real-life public speaking problem.
  • Beginning September 20, the show will air Fridays on Comedy Central, and also stripped five nights a week on local stations. CommunityonTV.com will alert fans what channels to tune to.
  • Series star and former writer Dino Stamatopoulous (Starburns) appeared in the question line, joking about the show?s writing and his own efforts to create a ?Community? graphic novel. The character could possibly return from his faked death, even as Stamatopoulos launches ?High Shool USA!? on Fox.
  • Harmon revealed that the season 5 whiteboard tentatively has a slot for another Dungeons and Dragons episode! The creator also apologized for his comments on the quality of ?Community? season 4, pointing out that fans of the series might not necessarily be fans of his.
  • Ken Jeong?s Chang will certainly be back, though Harmon hasn?t quite cracked what role he wants the character to take this season, having been so across the map previously.
  • Jim Rash hopes to see the Dean continue his creepy fetishes, while Yvette Nicole Brown hopes to meet Shirley?s previously mentioned sister, potentially played by Sherri Shepherd. Alison Brie hopes to see Annie more empowered and less focused on boys, while Danny Pudi would love to see Jamie Lee Curtis as his mother. During this, Jeong and Alison Brie sucked on one another?s fingers, because why not?

We?re not sure when NBC will place the fifth season of ?Community? still, but what say you? Were you excited to see Dan Harmon back with the cast for Comic-Con 2013? What new concepts beside an animated episode would you want to see in season 5?

Open Golf: Tiger aiming to call on Major experience

Confident Tiger states that he still knows how to win

Tiger Woods

Tiger Woods

World number one Tiger Woods hopes that experience will count today at Muirfield as he aims to chase down Lee Westwood and land his first Major in five years.

The American - who tees off at 14.00 with Masters champion Adam Scott - carded a one-over 72 yesterday to end on one-under-par for the tournament and feels that he is perfectly placed to mount a charge today.

?I'm pleased where I'm at,? said Woods. ?I'm only two back. There's only one guy ahead of me. And tomorrow, we'll see what they do tomorrow.?

While Woods has not won one of the sport's big prizes since the 2008 US Open at Torrey Pines, he maintains that the experience of winning 14 times will help him get over the line today.

I've got 14 of these things, and I know what it takes to win it.

?I've got 14 of these things, and I know what it takes to win it. I've been in this position before, in the past five years, and I've been in that hunt on that mix. And I'm in it again. Hopefully tomorrow I can play well and win the tournament.?

The world number one did acknowledge that Westwood is more than capable of lifting the Claret Jug, though, even though he has no Majors to his name.

?He's won tournaments all over the world. He knows how to win golf tournaments. I'm looking forward to the challenge of it.

"There's a bunch of guys who have a chance to win this tournament. And all of us need to really play well tomorrow to win it."

Online Product Search Given A Run For Its Money | PR Fire

Product search and price comparison sites are one of the biggest lead generators for online merchants and for years major players like Google Product Search, or as it is now known Google Shopping, have dominated the market.

From its inception, Google Product Search stood firmly against the paid inclusion model used by similar sites. It was free to have your products listed and so everyone from your local corner shop to major high street retailer were listed side by side. The range of results was staggering, and if you wanted a fair comparison of what was available online then this was the place to go. In a statement from 2004, Google said :

?Because we do not charge merchants for inclusion in Froogle [as Google Product Search was known in the beginning], our users can browse product categories or conduct product searches with confidence that the results we provide are relevant and unbiased.?

This all changed last year when Google announced that they would be moving away from their free model to an entirely paid inclusion model, and rebranding the service to Google Shopping. In a more recent statement Google said the reason for this was ?having a commercial relationship with merchants will encourage them to keep their product information fresh and up to date.? Google began this transition in the US last year, but has only recently rolled it out into UK product search results as well. Hundreds of thousands of listings have been dropped from retailers not willing to take part in the paid inclusion model, and now only premium advertiser?s products can be found using the service.

Since the paid inclusion model is being used by nearly all the major product search engines, will this open the door to new search engines and price comparison sites who are willing to list the products of any reputable online retailer and present unbiased results to their site?s users? One UK product search engine will be celebrating it?s official launch next month. The Laminated Book of Dreams began development after hearing the news of Google?s transition from the free inclusion model. From the start of this year they have gone through strenuous beta testing and have risen up to an Alexa traffic rank of 25,000 in Britain before they had even launched. The Laminated Book of Dreams promises to only show relevant and unbiased results. Their website states :

?The Laminated Book of Dreams is about relevance and impartiality.

?Practically all other product search engines manipulate their search results to give the highest paying sponsors higher priority, even if those sponsor?s products are not as relevant to your search query. Many only show advertiser?s products so there are no free listings at all. This lowers the range of results that are returned and also the relevance of the results.

?The Laminated Book of Dreams will not manipulate its results to give sponsors higher rankings and so our results are an unbiased mix of both free and paid listings.?

Of course we?ve heard this before. Time will tell if these new product search engines will live up to the old mantra ?Don?t be evil.?

Music alliance formed between Austin and Toronto Canada

by John Bumgardner

kvue.com

Posted on July 19, 2013 at 10:10 PM

AUSTIN, Texas ? The ?Live Music Capital of the World? has a new music alliance, now all that?s left is to work out the details with Canadian officials.

The new ?music city alliance? will partner the City of Austin and the City of Toronto Canada.

Details on the framework of the agreement will be discussed by the City of Toronto and the Toronto Economic Development Committee and the City of Austin.

In a letter earlier this year, Austin Mayor Lee Leffingwell extended an invitation to Canadian officials, spelling out plans in the works over the past two years, proposing a Music City Alliance partnership program.

?My office and the City of Austin are certainly interested in exploring such an alliance,? Leffingwell said in the letter.

Mayor Leffingwell has been in discussions with Toronto?s Mayor about their music industry and its economic impact since Canadian oficials visited Austin earlier this year. City leaders will now have to work on developing a strategic alliance.

?In communications between Toronto?s Mayor Ford and Austin?s Mayor Leffingwell, both agreed to work together to form a Music City Alliance that could develop opportunities for tourism and trade,? the Tuesday recommendation to Toronto?s City Council said.

Austin City Council passed a resolution in June after the visit from representatives for Toronto?s music industry and Canadian officials during South by Southwest in March.

The City of Austin passed a resolution to participate in a Music City Alliance as soon as similar legislation was passed by the City of Toronto.

In a recommendation to the Toronto City Council Tuesday, the measure spelled out a partnership with Austin; the Live Music Capital, a city three times smaller than Toronto, and compared the two cities thriving music communities.

?The City of Austin, recognized as the Live Music Capital of the World, shares many of the same characteristics of Toronto's music economy. Over the last twenty years, Austin, a city a third the size of Toronto, has created a music industry that generates three times as much economic activity as Toronto's does,? the recommendation said.

City leaders are working to develop a series of short, medium, and long-term recommendations for both cities and the Toronto Music Industry to ?position Toronto as a leading live music tourist destination and promote and foster Toronto's music cluster.?

Toronto City Council heard more about the plan and the need for the alliance during Tuesday?s meeting.

?Toronto needs to embrace this opportunity and demonstrate our shared commitment to promote and foster Toronto?s music cluster,? the recommendation spelled out. ?The concept of a Music City Alliance would provide a formalized structure and demonstrated commitment to promote and foster the music industry.?

Toronto leaders say the partnership will bring more economic activity and jobs to both cities. Leaders also point out the ?twinship? will afford new opportunities for musicians and music lovers in both cities.

MYRTLE BEACH: Foreclosures can slow Habitat's rehab work | Real ...

? Being left as the holder of a foreclosed home is not something any lender looks forward to, but the situation undoubtedly is worse for Habitat for Humanity than it is for Bank of America.

While BOA can let some of its foreclosed homes stay empty until the market makes them more attractive to buyers, Habitat for Humanity uses the income from the homes it builds and finances to pay for the rehabilitation of older homes that can get people in their own residences faster than building them one from scratch.

Gail Olive, executive director for Horry County Habitat for Humanity, said the nonprofit has recently foreclosed on one of its homes and is in the process of foreclosing two others.

?We have been working with the families for quite a while,? she said of the agency?s efforts to keep people in their homes, but despite the effort some remain either unable or are unwilling to make their monthly mortgage payments.

That?s not the kind of situation Habitat can leave unattended for long. Olive said that other families in a Habitat neighborhood will want to forego their mortgage payments if they see one owner staying in a home without paying.

The loss of the payments from foreclosures, she said, could mean that Habitat won?t have the income to use on rehabbing properties that can become homes for others.

?It does make a difference,? she said of the loss of income from foreclosures. ?We have a couple of properties we?re rehabbing and we could use the money there.?

Olive said that Horry Habitat ? which has built 110 new homes ? did some rehab projects early in its tenure, but then dropped the effort. Within the last year, though, it has been revived, boosted by donations of foreclosed homes from BOA and Chase Morgan.

Olive said the rehabilitation effort in particular needs the income from mortgage payments because donors aren?t as ready to give money and volunteers aren?t as willing to donate their time to rehabbing versus building a new home.

Owners who get into mortgage trouble they can?t get out of can surrender their home in lieu of foreclosure, Olive said, but not all choose that route.

And those who don?t are putting the agency in a place that just doesn?t feel right.

?We can?t afford not to have the payments,? Olive said.

Grand Strand realty tops state data

Pending home sales in South Carolina were up 17.5 percent for the year that ended June 30, according to a new report by the S.C. Association of Realtors.

But the Grand Strand far outperformed the state with pending home sales soaring 29.5 percent from June 2012 to June 2013.

Statewide, the price range with the largest gain was for homes above $300,001, which showed a 23.9 percent increase.

The overall median sales price for single-family homes statewide was up 3.2 percent to $163,100, nearly $12,000 below the $175,000 median single-family home price on the Grand Strand, which was 10.8 percent above June 2012.

As along the Grand Strand, inventory continued to drop statewide, a factor that contributed to the rising prices.

Homebuilding falls nationally

While corresponding numbers for the Grand Strand or South Carolina weren?t available Friday, the Associated Press reported that fewer new home construction starts were recorded by the U.S. Commerce Department in June than in May.

Builders nationally began construction on 836,000 homes in June in a seasonally-adjusted count, which was nearly 100,000 fewer homes than were started in May.

Most of the drop was because apartment construction fell by 27 percent in June from May, according to the report, a situation that may not have played a big part along the Grand Strand as area home construction thus far in the recovery appears concentrated in homes.

June?s home starts, while fewer than May, were still 10 percent above June 2012. And, according to the report, building permits were up 16 percent over last June.

The fall is believed to be just a pause, though.

The National Association of Home Builders reported in June that confidence among its members rose to the highest level since January 2006. Customer traffic and builders? outlook for single-family home sales over the next six months were at their highest level in at least seven years.
