Obama shares a moment with 7-year-old cancer patient

BERLIN, April 29 (Reuters) - Barcelona will try every trick in the book to overturn a 4-0 first-leg deficit against Bayern Munich in their Champions League semi-final return leg on Wednesday, honorary Bayern president Franz Beckenbauer warned on Monday. Bayern crushed the Spaniards last week in a surprisingly one-sided encounter but Beckenbauer, former player, coach and president of Germany's most successful club, warned that Barcelona were not ready to surrender. "Barca will try everything to throw Bayern off balance," he told Bild newspaper. ...

Meritful Launches A Student CRM Platform To Help Recruiters Keep Tabs On Campus Talent

meritful_logo_squareCollege recruiting is becoming increasingly competitive. Companies have begun to realize that top graduates not only bring a lot of talent and energy to the table, but they also tend to cost less than more experienced prospects. But in order to successfully woo those fortunate enough to have their pick, businesses need to begin the recruiting process earlier. If they're going to stand a chance, they have to build long-term, non-spammy relationships with students and educate them on the opportunities and culture unique to their business.

Syrian TV reports blast near Damascus school

DAMASCUS, Syria (AP) ? Syrian state-run TV says an explosion has taken place near a school in the capital, Damascus.

The TV says the blast struck on Monday in the capital's western neighborhood of Mazzeh. State-run news agency said there are casualties.

Damascus has been hit by a string of explosions in recent months that has left hundreds of people dead or wounded.

The Syrian government says Muslim extremists trying to overthrow President Bashar Assad are to blame for the attacks.

Syria's conflict started with largely peaceful protests against Assad's regime in March 2011 but eventually turned into civil war. The United Nations says that more than 70,000 people have been killed in the conflict so far.

Don Omar is top winner at Billboard Latin awards

CORAL GABLES, Fla. (AP) ? Reggaeton star Don Omar was the top winner of the Billboard Latin Music Awards, though the bigger star of the show might have been the one who wasn't there: The late Mexican-American singer Jenni Rivera.

Don Omar took home 10 prizes at the annual show Thursday honoring Spanish-language songs and performers. Rivera won six prizes, including artist of the year. The California-born superstar was killed in a plane accident last year in Mexico.

The show paid homage to Rivera with a tribute that included clips from live performances and her reality television show. Her brother Juan Rivera sang his sister's song "No Llega el Olvido" accompanied by a mariachi band.

"You are my diva," Rivera's father, Pedro Rivera, said in accepting the prizes. "May God bless you, my daughter."

Rivera sold more than 15 million copies of her 12 major-label albums during her career, which was cut short in December in a crash that killed her and six other people. She was born in Los Angeles and started her career by selling cassette tapes at flea markets. She went on to become adored by millions on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border drawn to her soulful singing and honest portrayal of her tumultuous personal life.

"We know she continues living in our hearts and through music," Rosa Saavedra, her mother, said.

The audience gave a standing ovation, many with tears in their eyes.

Mexican singing legend Jose Jose received the lifetime achievement award and Italian operatic singers Il Volo performed a moving rendition of his song "El Triste."

"Bless the Lord because he has converted me into a friend and accomplice of many couples, many hearts, and many marvelous souls who fall in love, and who suffer because of love," Jose Jose said in accepting the prize.

Other winners included bachata star Romeo Santos, who won three awards, including album of the year for "Formula: Vol. 1." He dedicated his prizes to the victims of the Boston Marathon bombings and to the Dominican Republic and Puerto Rico.

Santos sang a duet with Juan Luis Guerra that drew cries and screams from fans in the audience.

Salsa singer Marc Anthony, rock group Mana and Colombian pop artist Carlos Vives, who is making a comeback with his first album in eight years, also performed during the three-hour show, which was broadcast live on Telemundo.

Shakira, La Arrolladora Banda el Limon de Rene Camacho, and Natty Natasha took home three prizes each.

Latin music is starting to bounce back after a big dip in album sales during the recession. The rebound is thanks in large part to the growing Hispanic demographic in the U.S. and the rise of digital sales through online and cell phone services and subscriptions.

"Digital is over half our sales right now, and it continues to grow fast for Latin music," said Skander Goucha, senior vice president for Universal Music Latin Entertainment.

The awards show followed several days of panels and performances during the Billboard Latin Music Conference, a gathering of industry artists and professionals. This year's conference featured Uruguayan singer Jorge Drexler, who presented a mobile phone app that allows users to compose new songs using his lyrics and voice. Gloria Estefan also sat down for an extended interview in which she discussed her career and shared advice with aspiring artists.

"Stick to your guns," she said. "When one door closes, find another way to do what you want to do."

Don Banks of SI.com thinks the Bills? choice of QB E.J. Manuel means the read option will be part of their offense.

Said Dolphins coach Joe Philbin of first-round pick Dion Jordan, ?We?ve got to get our hands on him a little bit (and) work with him a little bit to find out what is his ideal weight and those type of things. I?m not going to sit here and say that we want him to be 265 pounds. We?ll see. Maybe his body isn?t going to function and do some of the things he can at that (weight). He may be able to.?

Patriots DT Vince Wilfork raised $235,000 at his draft party, 10 percent of which will go to marathon bombing victims with the rest to go to fight diabetes.

Two defensive players in the first round suggests coach Rex Ryan?s influence isn?t totally gone with the Jets.

The Ravens website calls trading up in the second round a possibility.

The Bengals didn?t reach for a tackle in the first round with Andre Smith still unsigned.

The Steelers were worried that the Saints would pick LB Jarvis Jones before they had a chance.

WR DeAndre Hopkins is the fourth straight player to come out of college early to be drafted by the Texans in the first round.

Colts DE Bjoern Werner is the first NFL first rounder to call his selection ?unglaublich,? which translates from German as ?beyond belief.?

The Jaguars look to be sitting pretty at the top of the second round.

G Chance Warmack thinks he convinced the Titans to pick him during a private workout.

What?s on the wish list for the Broncos on Friday?

T Eric Fisher said being drafted first overall by the Chiefs was like winning the lottery.

Said Raiders CB D.J. Hayden of whether he thought his career was over when his inferior vena cava was severed last season, ?I did. I definitely did. [It lasted] about a week, and I was just wondering if I would walk straight again. That?s what was on my mind; it was walking straight. I wasn?t worried about life after football. I wasn?t worried about life after college. I was just worried about walking.?

A negative review of the Chargers? decision to draft T D.J. Fluker.

Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said the two players the team considered trading up to get both were off the board in the top 10.

Giants OL Justin Pugh started all 34 games he played at Syracuse.

Even new Eagles T Lane Johnson thought the Dolphins were trading up to take him on Thursday night.

A look at defensive back options for the Redskins in the coming rounds.

Bears G.M. Phil Emery called Kyle Long the most athletic guard to come out in the last 12 years.

John Niyo of the Detroit News believes drafting DE Ziggy Ansah was a risk worth taking for the Lions.

The Packers highlighted the versatility of DE Datone Jones after drafting him on Thursday.

A bold offseason continued with the Vikings grabbing three players in the first round.

Falcons G.M. Thomas Dimitroff proved again that he isn?t afraid to make big moves to secure players he wants.

The Panthers didn?t waste much time before handing in the card picking DT Star Lotulelei in the first round.

Need might not be the driver when the Saints make their next pick in the third round.

The Buccaneers didn?t do any drafting, but they had quite a draft party.

G Jonathan Cooper said he was shocked the Cardinals picked him because he doesn?t read the mock drafts that projected him as a top 10 pick.

Trading up for WR Tavon Austin says that the Rams aren?t rebuilding anymore.

The 49ers ?absolutely? have a player in mind with the 34th pick.

The Seahawks are ready to jump into the draft after a quiet first night.

AirDroid 2.0 update adds phone finder, camera access and cellular data use

AirDroid 20 update adds phone finder, camera access and cellular data use

If you're an Android user with a pressing need to transfer files from your phone to your computer (and vice versa), there's a good chance you've heard of AirDroid. The remote access tool, which has been widely available on the Play Store for ages, has finally received an update that makes it even more useful. First, a primer: AirDroid gives you the ability to access all of the files on your phone -- APKs, music, photos, videos and plenty more -- directly in a web app on your browser, which offers an Android-like user interface. You can view or download videos, pull up your contact lists and even send and receive messages, just as if you were using the phone itself.

Version 2.0, which has been in the works for several months, adds even more useful functionality. The update now gives you the ability to access your phone with a cellular data connection, whereas WiFi was the only option previously. It also throws in a "Find my Phone" feature, a remote wipe and a camera option that will let you see your phone's front or rear camera views -- as well as snap pictures remotely and store them directly on your computer -- without activating the display (a very useful feature in case your prized possession gets stolen). It also supports incoming call notifications, as well as the opportunity to initiate outgoing ones. Not bad for a free (ad-supported) app, so head to the link below to check it out.

(AP) ? Shanghai has reported two more cases of human infection of a new strain of bird flu, raising the number of cases in eastern China to 18. Six of the people who contracted the virus have died.

Health officials believe people are contracting the H7N9 virus through direct contact with infected fowl and say there's no evidence the virus is spreading easily between people.

Shanghai's government said Saturday the latest victims are a 74-year-old peasant and a 66-year-old retiree. The city has been ordered by the agriculture ministry to halt its live poultry trade and slaughter all fowl in markets where the virus has been found.

The capital cities of the neighboring provinces of Zhejiang and Jiangsu also have suspended sales of live poultry. Both provinces have reported H7N9 cases.

South African university apologise for running survey saying white people are 'more attractive' than black people

  • University of Cape Town student newspaper Varsity conducted the poll
  • Found that 38% think white people were the most attractive
  • African people came last with only 8% of the vote
  • Student bodies and human rights activists have criticised the article.

A South African student newspaper caused a racial storm after publishing a poll that said white people are the most attractive race.

The University of Cape Town?s (UCT) Varsity newspaper conducted a survey of 60 students to decide which race is the most attractive.

It showed that 38 per cent of those surveyed thought that whites were the most attractive, while Africans had the lowest rating with just eight per cent.

Outrage: White people were found to be the most attractive with 38 per cent of the vote, while African people came last with just eight per cent

Outrage: White people were found to be the most attractive with 38 per cent of the vote, while African people came last with just eight per cent

The survey took in a wide range of ethnicities, with people from who were white, Indian, East Asian, mixed race, black or ?coloured? backgrounds.

The poll, which was conducted to accompany an article entitled ?Is Love Colour Blind? by student Qamran Tabo, has been condemned as racist.

The paper was forced to apologise after students and human rights activists complained.

?

The UCT Young Communist League of South Africa lodged a complaint with the country?s Human Rights Commission as they believe that the ?charade of a survey? incited racial hatred.

They said: ?The article and its alleged survey were always leading to inculcate a culture of one race being the jewel of all others. It is despicable to read.??

The university, which is considered among the best in Africa, only chose to remove its race-based admissions policy in February.

Academic: The University of Cape Town is considered one of the best universities in Africa

The UCT Student Representative Council said that they paper should have showed greater respect to an issue that had a ?painful historical significance?.?

Even South African human rights activist Zackie Achmat tweeted that the poll was ?racist nonsense?.

Critics took to Twitter to condemn the article.

Palee92 wrote: 'Uct varsity newspaper has lost the plot. Why are even wasting time discussing what the most attractive race is'

BabS_Nyembezi said: 'Wow. But the editorial team of UCT's "Varsity". I wish, for their sakes, the whole piece had been a misprint. They can't have been thinking.'

Editor-in-chief of Varsity Alexandra Nagel issued an apology to anyone who was offended.

She said: ?I am aware of the controversy surrounding the sensitivity of race and I understand that the right to freedom of expression has its limits when used unnecessarily to discriminate against others, slandering religion, race, sexuality.?

?However, Varsity feels that the writer was not abusing this right nor had the intention of issuing an attack on individual racial groups, but simply pinpointing a matter that is still affecting the lives of South Africans.?

PFT: Stallworth feared death during balloon crash

DeckerThomasAP

Eli Manning?s team currently is faced with one star receiver not under contract and another star receiver whose rookie contract will expire after the 2013 season.

His brother?s team will soon be facing a similar problem.

Thanks to the stats boost that came from swapping Tim Tebow for Peyton Manning, Eric Decker and Demaryius Thomas both had more than 1,000 yards receiving and double-digit touchdowns in 2012.? Decker?s four-year rookie contract expires after the 2013 season, and Thomas?s five-year first-round deal from that same draft expires after 2014.

The problem for the Broncos is that signing both guys to long-term, big-money deals could result in both of them to a certain extent being wasted after Manning retires.? Even if he plays three more years, the Broncos would get two years under Decker?s new deal and one under Thomas?s.

If Decker goes first, Thomas would likely try to surpass him in total value and guaranteed money.? The best strategy for keeping both, then, could be getting Decker signed to a reasonable long-term deal before he qualified for free agency, and then using the franchise tag on Thomas if necessary to keep him around for 2015, which could be Manning?s final season.

That approach means Decker would get paid at least two years before Thomas, which could make Thomas antsy about getting his own new contract.

For now, it appears that the Broncos are content to ride it out.? But if they can finish out the postseason with a Super Bowl win, they may have to use the franchise tag to keep Decker around for 2014, since he?d be a hot commodity on the open market.

At that point, the smart move for the Broncos could be to let Decker walk.? He then could be replaced by a lower-priced veteran who would relish the opportunity to catch plenty of passes and perhaps win a ring with Peyton Manning.

Which leads us back to the title of this specific blurb.? Soon, the Broncos may have to choose between the two receivers who were drafted three years ago by Josh McDaniels.

Baldness linked to increased risk of coronary heart disease

Apr. 3, 2013 ? Male pattern baldness is linked to an increased risk of coronary heart disease, but only if it's on the top/crown of the head, rather than at the front, finds an analysis of published evidence in the online journal BMJ Open.

A receding hairline is not linked to an increased risk, the analysis indicates.

The researchers trawled the Medline and the Cochrane Library databases for research published on male pattern baldness and coronary heart disease, and came up with 850 possible studies, published between 1950 and 2012.

But only six satisfied all the eligibility criteria and so were included in the analysis. All had been published between 1993 and 2008, and involved just under 40,000 men.

Three of the studies were cohort studies -- meaning that the health of balding men was tracked for at least 11 years.

Analysis of the findings from these showed that men who had lost most of their hair were a third more likely (32%) to develop coronary artery disease than their peers who retained a full head of hair.

When the analysis was confined to men under the age of 55-60, a similar pattern emerged. Bald or extensively balding men were 44% more likely to develop coronary artery disease.

Analysis of the other three studies, which compared the heart health of those who were bald / balding with those who were not, painted a similar picture.

It showed that balding men were 70% more likely to have heart disease, and those in younger age groups were 84% more likely to do so.

Three studies assessed the degree of baldness using a validated scale (Hamilton scale). Analysis of these results indicated that the risk of coronary artery disease depended on baldness severity, but only if this was on the top/crown of the head, known as the vertex.

Extensive vertex baldness boosted the risk by 48%, moderate vertex baldness by 36%, and mild vertex baldness by 18%. By contrast, a receding hairline made very little difference to risk, the analysis showed.

To compensate for differences in the methods of assessing baldness in the studies included in the analysis, the authors looked at four differing grades of baldness: none; frontal; crown-top; combined.

Once again, this indicated that the severity of baldness affected the risk of coronary heart disease.

Men with both frontal and crown-top baldness were 69% more likely to have coronary artery disease than those with a full head of hair, while those with just crown-top baldness were 52% more likely to do so. Those with just frontal baldness were 22% more likely to do so.

Explanations for the reasons behind the association vary, but include the possibility that baldness may indicate insulin resistance, a precursor to diabetes; a state of chronic inflammation; or increased sensitivity to testosterone, all of which are involved directly or indirectly in promoting cardiovascular disease, say the authors.

But they conclude: "[Our] findings suggest that vertex baldness is more closely associated with systemic atherosclerosis than with frontal baldness. Thus, cardiovascular risk factors should be reviewed carefully in men with vertex baldness, especially younger men" who should "probably be encouraged to improve their cardiovascular risk profile."

BP puts U.S. wind farm arm up for sale

LONDON (Reuters) - BP has put its U.S. wind farm operation, one of the largest in the country, up for sale, marking the continued retreat of big oil companies from renewable energy investments while oil and gas projects offer them better returns.

The British oil company has already sold or earmarked for sale some $38 billion worth of assets, partly to raise funds to pay for its 2010 U.S. oil spill liabilities, but also to reposition itself as a smaller, leaner company with an emphasis on high-margin oil production and exploration. Reports said the sale could raise a further $1.5 billion.

BP would not put a value on any sale, but said in a statement it expected "attractive offers" for the assets. They include interests in 16 operating wind farms in nine states with a combined generating capacity of around 2,600 megawatts of renewable power, as well as a portfolio of projects in various stages of development.

Over a decade ago, big oil companies including BP and Shell began to ramp up investment in renewable energy. But the uncertain outlook for government subsidies and prices in solar, wind and other clean energy areas, along with the re-emergence of strong prices for oil and opportunities to develop large gas fields, have since distracted their attention.

BP, which under former chief executive John Browne once named itself "Beyond Petroleum", still has a substantial interest in Brazilian biofuels, but has invested only about $1 billion a year in renewables since 2005 from a total capital spending budget of well over $20 billion annually. It has no specific investment plans for the sector in the years ahead.

Dentists help us maintain oral hygiene. Unfortunately, most of us are not fond of them. There aren?t many who get all excited to pay a visit to the dentist. This is due to the wrong notion about dentists. If you are one of them, here are some amazing reasons to pay regular visits to a dentist.

Even if there?s a chance of pain, the dentist wouldn?t let you go through it. He will use apt procedures to keep you from the trauma. He will use anaesthetic as and where required. Michael Jackson civil case jury selection begins

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Jury selection began Tuesday in a lawsuit filed by Michael Jackson's mother against the promoter of the late pop star's planned comeback concerts.

Dozens of prospective jurors answered written questionnaires that gauged their ability to serve on the trial, which may last three months. One 24-page section of the questionnaire focused on each person's knowledge and opinions on Jackson's life, his music, his family, as well as media coverage and whether they would have a problem deciding a multimillion-dollar case.

Katherine Jackson's case accuses concert giant AEG Live of failing to properly investigate the former doctor who was convicted of involuntary manslaughter for the superstar's June 2009 death.

AEG has denied wrongdoing and its attorney, Marvin Putnam, has said the company could not have foreseen circumstances that led to Jackson dying from an overdose of the powerful anesthetic propofol.

The trial will revisit the singer's final days, as well as his struggles with insomnia and prescription drugs.

Jackson's family is seeking $40 billion, but jurors will determine any damage amounts awarded. If they award damages, jurors will have to determine how much responsibility AEG Live has for Jackson's death.

The panel also could determine that the pop superstar was responsible for his own demise and limit the amount his family can collect.

The court proceedings, though routine, drew interest from fans and media outlets, who parked satellite trucks and cameras outside the courthouse. Katherine Jackson, who sued AEG in 2010 and has had her case trimmed to a single allegation of negligent hiring and supervision, did not attend the first day of jury selection.
