The E-R Sports Show: Vikings Feeling OK, But Struggling on the Field

While the West Valley High football team put a damper on Pleasant Valley's plans for homecoming, the Vikings don't appear shaken in their belief.

PV remained steadfast for the most part even when the game got out of hand. Three turnovers on? the first three possessions will do that. The visiting Eagles cashed in the first two miscues, taking a 14-0 lead with 9:43 left in the first quarter on a pair of Austin Clark TD runs.

Clark, the junior from West Valley (5-0), finished with five TDs, including four scores in the first half. His night ended with a staggering tally of 279 yards rushing on 16 carries with TD runs of 28, 10, 60, 2 and 65 yards. He also had two catches for 16 yards, and he picked off a PV pass for interception.

Despite Clark and six turnovers, PV didn't seem too dismayed. The Vikings, not just first-year coach Mark Cooley, said how they simply have to play better -- especially from the start.

PV (2-3) turned the ball over on the game's first play from scrimmage. The Eagles needed two plays to score.

The Vikings turned the ball over three plays later with an interception, the first of two straight picks for PV.? On the latter miscue, the PV defense held.

The Vikings, though, can't dig themselves a hole in future weeks. Against Paradise the week prior, the Vikings allowed a touchdown on the Bobcats' first play from scrimmage.

PV scored its touchdown on a 95-yard kickoff return from Matt Henderson in the third quarter.

Sam Savercool had an OK night with 92 yards rushing on 18 carries. But the passing game wasn't there basically night and the visitors to pick off three passes.

Zane Ferguson, the second-stringer, relieved starting quarterback Greg Darms briefly in the second quarter. The JV starter from last season then basically played the entire second half as well.

The road doesn't get any easier for PV as the Vikings travel next Friday to Palo Cedro for a game against Foothill. The Cougars fell at Paradise 53-25 Friday night.

Jason Merritt/Getty Images

Amanda Bynes pleaded not guilty to two counts of hit-and-run on Thursday, marking just the latest development in a string of driving-related troubles for the actress over the past several months.

Bynes, whose career launched on Nickelodeon and on the TV sitcom What I Like About You, has starred in such films as Easy A, Hairspray, What a Girl Wants and She's the Man. But over the past several months, the 26-year-old has generated more headlines for her legal issues than her acting.

PHOTOS: 6 Stars Immune to Bad Reviews

Below is a timeline of her recent woes:

March 7, 2012: Bynes is pulled over for allegedly talking on her cell phone. She then allegedly fled the scene before the officer finished writing her ticket. She wasn't arrested and reportedly went to the police station later that day to sign her ticket.

April 4, 2012: Bynes is arrested for DUI. The 26-year-old actress is reportedly pulled over around 3 a.m. in West Hollywood after trying to pass a police car in her BMW and side-swiping the vehicle. Bynes allegedly refuses to take a Breathalyzer or drug test at the scene of the accident and is taken into custody. She is released from jail at 10:30 a.m. Her bail had been set at $5,000.

June 5, 2012: Bynes is charged with driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs in relation to her April arrest. Immediately following her hearing, Bynes takes to Twitter to enlist the help of President Obama. ?I don?t drink,? she writes in a tweet addressed to @BarackObama. ?Please fire the cop who arrested me. I also don?t hit and run. The end.?

STORY: Amanda Bynes Arrested for DUI?

June 6, 2012: Bynes pleads not guilty to driving under the influence. She does not appear in Beverly Hills Superior Court but dispatches her attorney. She faces a maximum of six months in jail.

August 4, 2012: Bynes allegedly rear-ends a driver on L.A.'s Ventura Boulevard, inflicting $800 worth of damage; according to what the driver told police, Bynes sees no problem with the car and drives away without exchanging insurance information or allowing for a police call to assess the situation. Bynes argues that the two both agreed there was minimal damage.

Sept. 4, 2012: Bynes is charged with hit-and-run in connection with the April and August crashes.

Sept. 6, 2012: A city attorney's spokesperson tells the Los Angeles Times that Bynes faces up to a year in jail for her two hit-and-run accidents. The same day, the California Department of Motor Vehicles suspends Bynes driver's license.

Sept. 16, 2012: Bynes' black BMW is impounded after she is pulled over and cited for driving with a suspended license.

30 years ago, the CD started the digital music revolution

11 hrs.

The digital music revolution officially hit 30 years ago, on Oct. 1, 1982. While you may be surprised to learn?that the heralds of the coming age were, in fact, the Bee Gees, it probably comes as less of a shock to learn that Sony was at the very heart of it. After years of?research and an?intense period of?collaboration with Philips, Sony shipped the world's first CD player, the CDP-101. Music???and how we listen to it???would never be the same.

Today the CD player might be seen as something of a relic, since our smartphones, iPods and satellite radios provide seamless access to not only our entire music libraries, but to nearly every artist or track available. We can dictate any song or album to an app and have it playing in seconds, or download a new single by visiting an artist's Facebook page.

In such a world, the idea of carrying around a disc loaded with just 10 or 12 tracks and switching it out every hour sounds positively stone-age.?But the MP3 and streaming media are not just the CD's replacements, but its descendants. The future of music in fact made its unofficial debut, believe it or not, in the hands of the Bee Gees.

It was on the BBC show Tomorrow's World in 1981?that the Bee Gees publicly?demonstrated CD technology (and a new album, Living Eyes) for the first time. Artists were excited about the format ? the prospect of a high-quality, track-separated, non-degrading medium was enticing, though many were still skeptical of digital encoding. But music industry heavies like David Bowie and renowned conductor Herbert von Karajan were quick to embrace it, and soon the likes of Dire Straits would hit a million sales and cement the CD's position?as the new standard for music.

That triumph was a long time coming: development of the format began in the '70s, when both Sony and Philips were independently doing research on an digital,?optical disc format to replace cassette tapes and records. Early work at Sony was led by Norio Ohga, who bravely bore the skepticism of his comrades in order to create and demonstrate the earliest versions in 1976 and 1978.

Meanwhile, Philips was on the same track, so to speak. Their original version, an evolution of the laserdisc, was a whopping 20cm in diameter, but after reflection they brought the size of their prototype down to 11.5cm ? the same size, measured diagonally, as a cassette tape.

In 1979, the two companies decided to work together. They set up a task force of less than a dozen people ? engineers who didn't know if they could trust each other. After breaking the ice, however, the team worked for a year and?managed to arrive at a set of standards, called the "Red Book." The manufacturing process and method of encoding were contributed by Philips, while Sony created the digital error-correction that made reading the data reliable.

The new technology was privately inaugurated in 1980, and the first modern CD pressed was Richard Strauss's "Alpine Symphony." The next year, the Bee Gees went on the BBC, and the year after that the CD as we know it today was born.

That October of 1982, the CDP-101 made its debut in Japan alongside the first run of CD albums, led by Billy Joel's 52nd Street. The device was expensive: ?168,000, ?about $730 at the time, or almost twice that when adjusted for inflation. But home audio wasn't cheap then, and there was a market eager to snap up the new, high-fidelity audio format.

The engineers behind it?had really had a task: everything about the system was brand new. As Jacques Heemskerk, one of the senior Philips engineers on the project, told the BBC in 2007:

It was revolutionary in many fields???the optics were new, the disc was new. At the start of development there wasn't even a laser that would work well enough for our needs.?The most advanced laser at the time had a lifespan of only 100 hours.

So the cost was justified by the complexity and novelty of the hardware. Other manufacturers, like Toshiba, Kenwood, and of course Philips, would produce variant CD players over the course of the next year.?

The first CDs to market, with the notable exception of Billy Joel, were mostly classical. In fact, the capacity of the CD was raised during development from 60 to 74 minutes in order to accommodate Beethoven's Ninth Symphony. The creators of the format knew that classical music lovers were more likely to appreciate (and more likely?to pay for) the increased quality of the CD system.?

The pop and rock market, however, was still in love with cassettes, which were more portable and more ubiquitous than ever. 1979 had brought the first Walkman, and cassette players were now standard equipment in car radios. The CD was, for the moment, strictly for the home, where your nice speakers and amp would make the improved fidelity sing. Even there, to this day, some audiophiles swear by vinyl records and an all-analog setup.

It wasn't until later in the '80s that things really took off. Dire Straits'?Brothers In Arms?sold a million CDs in 1985, suggesting that the format had finally hit its stride. It wasn't long before other artists were selling millions upon millions of their albums in CD format. The Discman, introduced in 1984, and the CD-ROM format, enabling computers to read the discs, further accelerated uptake.

The rest, as they say, is history. Since that time, hundreds of billions of CDs have been shipped and sold ? the numbers are near-impossible to track, since the easily duplicated?digital data led to an enormous increase in piracy and counterfeiting, not to mention the billions of copies and mix-CDs made by normal users.

Music CDs?peaked in 2000 with global sales estimated?at around 2.5 ?billion. Soon (legal) digital downloads began to replace physical media for many music buyers. Though its numbers are on the decline,?CDs are still produced today on the order of hundreds of millions, and it will be many years yet before the world's CD factories shut their doors.

The size and shape of the CD, as well as its capacity, portability, and versatility, have been a major factor in how music has been developed and consumed for decades. Albums were written to fill it, new formats like the DVD were made in imitation of it, and entire new trends in media resulted from it. The Compact Disc started the digital revolution for music in the '70s, and we're still feeling the effects.

Iranian news agency picks up Onion article as fact

CHICAGO (AP) ? A joke by the satirical newspaper The Onion appears to have gotten lost in translation.

An Iranian news agency has picked up as fact a story from the paper about a supposed survey showing a majority of white Americans would rather vote for Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad (ah-muh-DEE'-neh-zhahd) than President Barack Obama. The only trouble is it was made up, like everything in the just-for-laughs newspaper, which is headquartered in the comedic capital Chicago.

The English-language service of Iran's semiofficial Fars news agency republished the story Friday, several days after it appeared in The Onion.

The Iranian version is copied word-for-word from the original. It leaves out only The Onion's description of Ahmadinejad as "a man who has repeatedly denied the Holocaust and has had numerous political prisoners executed."

Why health insurance must get social now: 6 stats ? Bazaarvoice Blog

Retail was first to embrace social ? encouraging customers to talk about, review, comment on, and ask questions about the products they sell. Brands quickly followed suit, and travel is catching up. First-movers in highly regulated financial services have now opened up to conversations as well.

Yet most health insurance companies still fail to see the writing on the wall: all products, services, and industries are already discussed online ? and the companies that encourage, learn from, and act on these conversations are surging ahead.

The numbers don?t lie: health insurers must get social ? or get left behind.

Consumers no longer trust companies because they no longer have to: 59-65% of consumers find user-generated content more honest and genuine than any other online information.

That?s 65% of consumers 18-37 and 59% of those 47-65.1 And the vast majority of consumers agree that consumer feedback is a good indicator of the quality of a service: 86% of consumers 18-37 and 79% of those 47-65. 1 There?s a trust gap in every industry today, but none more than financial services and health insurance. It?s not that you?re viewed as an ?evil corporation.? It?s simply that consumers now have the information they trust most ? opinions from other consumers ? right at their fingertips. So, be the one to give it to them.

Consumers will pay more for trust: Half don?t trust their current insurer.

On average, consumers would pay $30 more per month to work with a health insurer they trust. Some would even pay as much as $100 per month more. And 84% of consumers must trust a brand before interacting with it at all. It pays to be trusted, and the insurers that transparently accept and display member feedback will build that trust first.

Young consumers need others? opinions when buying: 29% of those 18-37 won?t buy insurance without reading others? opinions.1

Most Millennials haven?t yet started shopping for health insurance, but with the coming healthcare reforms, they will. Insurers that meet their needs early can keep them for life. The opportunity? These young consumers need others? opinions before making buying decisions ? and the percentage will only increase as more start shopping for insurance. In industries Millennials are already familiar with, their need for opinions is high: 44% of Millennials won?t buy major electronics without owners? feedback, and 40% won?t buy cars. 1 Health insurers that gather positive recommendations first will win.

Older consumers want others? insurance opinions, too: 30% of 47-65 won?t buy insurance without reading others? opinions.1

It?s not just Millennials who need others? opinions. Older consumers are actually more reliant on word of mouth when it comes to insurance decisions. Member feedback and brand perception are some of the only (if not the only) differentiators for health insurers. Start gathering feedback immediately to set your brand apart from others. Member content helps guide your marketing as well ? letting you echo authentic sentiments about your brand back to new consumers.

Consumers seek out others like them to discuss their health: 23% of people with a chronic ailment go online to find others with similar concerns.

One in four internet users living with high blood pressure, diabetes, heart conditions, lung conditions, cancer, or some other chronic ailment say they have gone online to find others with similar health concerns. And one in five adults (21%) say they turned to others who have the same health condition the last time they had a health issue. Creating communities for members with like conditions to gather, share information, and find support creates an emotional affinity with your brand ? showing members that you care and earning their loyalty. And if they can?t find these communities in your network, they?ll find them somewhere else.

Young consumers don?t think companies care: Only 29% of Millennials believe companies truly want to know what customers think.

And yet, 64% of Millennials still want companies to give them more ways to share this feedback. To bridge that trust gap mentioned earlier? Show consumers you care by listening and acting. It?s not enough to get them to talk. Analyze what your members are saying, and look for trends with opportunities to improve. Let members know when you take action on their feedback ? both to build trust, and to encourage more feedback in the future.

Corporate Tax Loopholes Are Killing Us | Wall Street Oasis

I've long been opposed to a flat tax or the so called "Fair Tax" on the basis that once you grant the government the ability to levy a consumption tax then it's probably just a matter of time before they ratchet the rate up to the stratosphere. What might start as a 20% flat tax today could be 30% or even 40% a decade from now. But when I see things like the following video, it makes me re-think my objections. Our tax code is so complicated that the only people who don't get screwed by it are the people or corporations who can afford an army of tax commandos to handle their business. Maybe a flat tax is the way to go.
