E-gold Invest: Make Money With Currency Trading | YodZiaN.CoM ...

Many people are already starting to pay attention to the newest online trend: E-gold investing.

E-gold investing is a all about a system that allows you to profit from the money that is being traded everyday on the internet. What you?re doing when you are trading e-gold (or e-currencies) is that you are providing the backup for internet money. Let me go back a bit. What exactly do I mean by ?backup for internet money??

There is a cashflow of all of the money that is being moved throughout the internet every day. However, this money has to have, for every dollar that is being backed up, a physical backup of that dollar must exist.

This is a very superficial explanation about how the dxgold system works, but to be honest, to profit from it, you don?t have to understand exactly how it works to profit from it. If I were to put the e-gold training courses into a metaphor I would say it?s very much like driving a car. You don?t need to know how it works in order to use it properly.

What you do need to know is the egold exchange process and every step of the way. This may sound complex, but once you get to know it, it becomes a daily routine that takes about five minutes just to check up on.

Investing in e-gold is something that I could describe as a great investing strategy, if you are investing in the long run.

It isn?t as fast as a rising stock in wall street, it isn?t something that will double your profits in a couple of days, but it is something you can expect to generate a good income from. And the important keyword in that past sentence would be to Expect, because this is a safe long term strategy that is guaranteed to make a profit for you.

This is why I personally think it is plain silly not to learn this currency trading system. You even know how much money you will make each day in advance.

For some it may be tough, but saving a couple of hundred dollars and investing in e-gold can be a very wise decision. As many people have experienced already, it can even turn into a ?hands off? second income without the 8 to 5 job.

E-gold is all about discipline. Is about the discipline of having your money work for you and letting it grow, without getting an urge of a shopping spree and taking your money out of your account.

If you think you can wait for a few months and are interested in getting a second income, then the e-gold system could be a good fit for you.

I?ve writen detailed reviews for the best courses about e-currency exchange, visit my site (http://www.currencytrading-center.com) for the inside scoop on how to Invest in e-gold

List Building Mistakes | Terry Bains - Internet Marketing Blog

In the last section we talked about some simple tools you can use to build your subscriber list. There are many possibilities and opportunities to expand your list if you are willing to put in the time and effort. Once you have a solid list, you are positioned to sell your product or service more efficiently on the Web or off the Web.

In this chapter well look at some more ways of building your subscriber lists. Many people decide to build their mailing list by buying a mailing lists or subscriber lists. There are many places you can rent or buy mailing lists. Generally however, these lists do not work as well as collecting leads on your own. Sometimes buying a list causes problems. For example, many subscribers on these lists are people that didnt want their personal information sold, so they may end up resenting you for contacting them, and even report you for Spam.

While you can use these lists and they might work, you have to consider whether the price is worth it as they are very expensive. If you are short on time and have some free capital to spare, you might start with a rented or bought list and then work on building your own subscriber list.

Building Your Own Mailing List

You cant rely on others to build your mailing list for you. If you want to succeed you must do everything possible to create your own success.

Building your own list is the best way to earn the trust and loyalty of subscribers and to ensure your personal success and satisfaction. While you are building your subscriber list using the tools we talked about in the first chapter, you can also use the information you gather to start building your own mailing list. Some new business owners are afraid to ask their customers for personal information to include on their list. But for many, a mailing list can make or break a business.

A mailing list is a must have if you want to create large-scale sales and realize significant profits on the Web. Want to know why a mailing list is important? Heres why. Typically the average customer will visit a website seven or more times before they buy something. As long as you give your customers a reason to revisit your site, they will. That is why you need a mailing list

You can mail a newsletter to your list to encourage your customers to visit your site and look at recent additions or updates. There are many statistics confirming that customers repeatedly buy from email advertisements, so dont think you dont need a mailing list. You do. And you need a good one at that.

How To Avoid Mistakes When Creating Your Subscriber List

Before we talk more about the steps you should take to build your subscriber list, lets make sure we are clear on what you should NOT do when building your subscriber list. Many newbies fall victim to scams or programs offering free traffic that will boost their sales. Unfortunately many of these programs are nothing more than scams and may end up costing you more money than they make.

They can even prevent you from restarting your business and achieving the success you deserve. So lets make sure you do not make these common mistakes.

Lets start by looking at some things you should avoid when trying to build your list.

List Building No Nos

There are certain things you should never do when trying to build your subscriber list. The #1 mistake list builders make is buying bulk emails. Here is a tip:

NEVER BUY AND SEND BULK EMAIL TO PEOPLE

You wont make any money sending bulk emails to people. Why? Because they are garbage. They are worthless. By now you must have done some research on list building or you wouldnt be reading this book. You may see ads that promise thousands of email addresses for less than $50. If you see ads like this, know you are working with a bulk mail company.

While having thousands of subscribers would be great, it isnt great if you are getting your names from a bulk mailing list. Bulk companies get their email addresses by using automatic tools, including robots on the Web.

If you buy the list, there is a very good chance you are buying a list of names of people that dont want to be advertised to for the product you are offering. You risk being labeled a spammer. If no one asked to subscribe to your mailing list and you send them an email, what are you doing? You are spamming them.

Spamming people is the number one way to fail at building your subscriber list. Bulk mailing ads are useless. Avoid them at all costs if you want to run a successful campaign.

Bulk mailing lists also are not targeted. Targeted lists are lists that have the names and contact information of people that would have an active interest in buying what it is you have to offer. If you buy a bulk list, you run the risk of trying to sell a female hormonal cream to a man interested in sports gear. Not a good combination.

Now lets look at another popular scam used on the web to pull new business owners in and trick them into spending their hard earned money on traffic and list building programs that dont work.

Guaranteed Traffic Scam

Many new business owners are tempted by offers of guaranteed traffic for a very low price. Now, these companies may send 100,000 or more visitors to your website, but you may not get a single subscriber or make a single sale.

Why? Traffic is generated by pop up windows appearing on other websites. Your website is loaded into a pop up window. So, someone may be surfing the net and your website pops up below the site he is searching. This results in sending out your website to thousands of untargeted customers. The key to success in list building is creating a list of TARGETED customers.

Targeted customers are customers that are most likely to be interested in buying your product. They have, in some way, offered their information and stated that they have an interest in a product. Lets say you sell beauty products. You want a targeted list of consumers, mostly women, interested in buying beauty products on the Web. If you get a list of untargeted customers, your business will go nowhere. Most untargeted customers wont buy anything, and they dont want to be hassled by traffic generating pop ups.

Apple patent lawsuits costs $1200 per hour in legal fees ? Theatre BC

Apple Inc. has spent at least $32 million in one patent-infringement dispute with Google Inc.s Motorola Mobility unit ? one among many legal fights on four continents.

Add them up and its clear the Cupertino, California-based company is paying hundreds of millions of dollars in its quest to prove that Samsung Electronics Co., Motorola Mobility and HTC Corp. ripped off the iPhone.

The lawsuits are a boon for patent lawyers, who bill companies as much as $1,200 an hour each for their ability to help jurors and judges understand technology and arcane rules of law. Apple has spent more than $2 million on expert witnesses alone for a trial in its case against Samsung in federal court in San Jose, California, based on a compilation of what witnesses said they were being paid. That case is in the hands of the jury.

When you have the smartphone wars and theres a lot at stake, no one is telling you to do a hard cost-and-benefit analysis, said Max Grant, a lawyer with Latham amp; Watkins in Washington. People arent making those judgments. Theyre just saying, Do everything you can to get what you need. Legal fees, like advertising, are investments in the companies efforts to seize and defend share in a global smartphone market that grew 62 percent to $219 billion last year. Suwon, Korea-based Samsung is the worlds biggest smartphone maker, while Apple dominates in the US

Apples $32 million expense in the one Motorola Mobility dispute equals less than six hours of iPhone sales.

More than money, the complaints seek to use the power of patent law to force competitors to remove popular features or disrupt distribution plans. HTC was delayed in selling its newest phones in May after one Apple victory.

No Settlement Apple contends devices using Googles Android operating system copy features that make the iPhone and iPad tablet computer unique, and is fighting counterclaims it uses other companies inventions.

Apple co-founder Steve Jobs told his biographer hed spend $40 billion if necessary on a thermonuclear war to prove that Android phones copy the iPhone.

The various sides have met several times with no resolution, including an Aug. 20 court-ordered talk between Jobs successor, Apple Chief Executive Officer Tim Cook, and Samsungs former CEO Choi Gee Sung. HTC has said its willing to settle.

Motorola Mobility says Apple wont negotiate; Apple says Motorola Mobility is making unreasonable demands.

Consumers choose between Apple and Android makers for their mobile phones, then stick with that operating system for other devices, features and accessories that can build brand loyalty, Apple lawyer Mark Perry of Gibson Dunn told a US appeals court Aug. 20.

Expert Witnesses It means more than these patents, such as leveraging cross-license deals, said David Long, a patent lawyer with Dow Lohnes in Washington. This is scratching the surface. Apple has become the worlds most valuable company, with a sevenfold stock surge since the iPhone debuted in January 2007. The iPhone generated $47 billion in sales in fiscal 2011, and the iPad tablet brought in another $20 billion.

Apple told a court in Wisconsin it has spent at least $32 million defending itself in an case at the US International Trade Commission brought by Motorola Mobility and related litigation that accuses the Libertyville, Illinois-based company of abusing its patents.

A typical patent case costs each side $10 million to $15 million. That can rise to $25 million or more when a case involves a large number of patents and much at stake for a company, according to an informal survey of lawyers.

40 Lawyers Costs are higher in cases before the ITC. The Washington agency has shorter timelines, squabbles over obtaining information from overseas companies, and no limits on how much pretrial evidence can be gathered or witnesses questioned. Forty or more lawyers may be assigned to each side in an ITC case, based on a review of dockets.

US district court hearings can have 20 lawyers on either side. One or two wil take the lead, and the rest will be responsible for specific witnesses, the technology behind a single patent, or the legal arguments backing a key point.

These big global cases, they become no stone unturned, no grain of sand unturned ? and for every one you turn over, you examine every facet, Long said.

To do that, you need lots of people. You go down 1,000 rabbit holes, 10,000 rabbit holes, and most of them are empty but theres one of them thats not. The smartphone makers dont disclose their total patent litigation costs. At some smaller companies, those expenses are enough to affect earnings.

Computer-chip designer Rambus Inc. spent $56 million each in 2008 and 2009 when it was embroiled in trials, and chip packaging company Tessera Inc. has spent as much as $84 million in a year, based on their annual reports.

Multiple Dips There can be big returns. Catheter maker CR Bard, represented by Lathams Grant, spent at least $19 million, based on the amount it was reimbursed, to win a $185.6 million verdict thats grown to more than $900 million with royalties and interest.

Quinn Emanuel, the firm that has become the Android protector in representing Samsung, Motorola and HTC, bills an average of $821 an hour for a partner and $448 for an associate, according to a July 22 filing in the trial in San Jose. Lawyers can bill up to 80 hours a week during trial.

Lawyers often represent clients in multiple cases. Quinn Emanuels Charles Verhoeven spent May 31 arguing that Samsung didnt copy Apple designs in a case at the ITC. That trial was still going on when, a week later, Verhoeven was down the hall telling another ITC judge that Apple was using Samsung inventions without permission. By the end of July, he was in San Jose presenting opening arguments.

Steam Engine Another lawyer with the firm, Robert Feldman, presented HTCs arguments Aug. 8 in a trade commission trial over Apple claims involving two patents also at the heart of the Samsung case. Quinn Emanuels Alex Lasher filed a complaint against Apple on behalf of Motorola Mobility at the ITC on Aug. 17.

For Apple, Harold McElhinny of Morrison amp; Foerster opposed Verhoeven on May 31, while William Lee of WilmerHale took the lead for Apple on June 4.

The two lawyers share top billing in San Jose. The median partner rate for a lawyer with Morrison amp; Foerster is $582 an hour and $398 for associates, the firm said in a May 7 filing.

David Kappos, director of the US Patent and Trademark Office, told a House subcommittee in May that patent fights of similar scope occurred over the sewing machine and the telegraph when they were new.

William Rosen, author of The Most Powerful Idea in the World, about the origins of the Industrial Revolution in the UK, said the steam engines development was marked by years of patent suits.

How can you have a system that rewards innovation that doesnt involve litigation? he asked.

HP has $8.9B loss on expected charge for EDS flop

(AP) ? Hewlett-Packard absorbed the largest quarterly loss in its history as the Silicon Valley pioneer owned up to past mistakes that have left it scrambling to adapt to a shifting technology market.

The loss of $8.9 billion announced Wednesday didn't come as a surprise. HP telegraphed the news earlier this month when it disclosed plans to take an $8 billion charge to reflect the shrinking value of Electronic Data Systems, a technology consulting service it bought for $13 billion in 2008.

It represented another mortifying setback for a 73-year-old company that once had the reputation for being a fountain of innovation ?and a great place to work, to boot. Now, HP is struggling to reverse perceptions that it's becoming a technological dinosaur bogged down in bureaucracy as it slashes its work force to help offset a downturn in revenue.

The company is counting on Meg Whitman, its third CEO in slightly more than two years, to be its savior. While stressing she believes HP can still be great again, Whitman made it clear Wednesday that it will be a long slog.

"Make no mistake about it: We are still in the early stages of a turnaround," Whitman told analysts during a conference call.

That has become Whitman's mantra since HP hired her as CEO 11 months ago. Later in the call, Whitman acknowledged "the very serious execution issues" facing HP as it tries to catch up to its rivals and cope with a weakening economy, particularly in Europe.

Whitman, who became one of the world's best-known chief executives during a decade-long stint running eBay Inc., has been shaking things up at HP by reorganizing divisions, ushering in new managers and slashing costs through the job cuts.

As Whitman's remarks underscored the enormity of the challenge facing HP, more investors bailed out of the company's stock. HP shares sank 94 cents, or nearly 5 percent, to $18.26 in Wednesday's after-hours trading, reversing earlier gains after the latest quarterly results were released. The shares have lost more than half their value in the past two years, a factor that contributed the EDS charge during the three-month period ending in July.

HP also had to absorb charges to cover severance payments for the first wave of the 27,000 workers it is jettisoning to dramatically reduce its expenses as its revenue shrivels. The company, which is based in Palo Alto, Calif., now expects to drop 11,500 employees from its payroll by the end of October, up from its previous target of 9,000. Another 15,500 employees will be let go through October 2014.

The cutbacks are driven by the rising popularity of mobile phones and tablet computers ? devices that are reducing demand for personal computers. That's bad news for HP, which is the world's largest maker of PCs and printers.

To cope with the upheaval, HP has been expanding into technology consulting, computer software, data storage and high-end servers made for companies and government agencies. All those specialties are more profitable than the fiercely competitive PC market, but HP hasn't been evolving rapidly enough to avoid an alarming deterioration in its financial performance.

Like several other major technology companies, HP has also been hurt by the recent economic turmoil in Europe. The uncertainty caused by unwieldy government debt in Europe has curbed spending on the continent.

If HP's slump worsens, management warned it may have to register additional charges in the current quarter to account for trouble in other acquisitions. Without citing specifics, HP executives pointed to the company's software operations as one area that could be lumped with a major accounting charge. That division includes Autonomy, a business software service that HP bought for $11 billion last year.

The fiscal third-quarter loss Wednesday translates to $4.49 per share for a period covering the three months ending in July. The company earned $1.9 billion, or 93 cents per share, at the same time last year.

HP's revenue sank 5 percent from last year to $29.7 billion. That was about $500 million below the projections of analysts polled by FactSet. It marked HP's fourth consecutive year-over-year quarterly decrease in revenue.

PC sales during the latest quarter fell by about 10 percent from the same time last year, Whitman said. She traced the decline to fierce price competition, a growing preference for tablet computers and smartphones, and postponed purchases among buyers waiting for the release of a new line of machines running Windows 8, a radical overhaul of Microsoft Corp.'s operating system set for release October 26.

Whitman's clampdown on expenses also appeared to be delivering savings more quickly than Wall Street anticipated. If not for the company's various charges, HP said it would have earned $1 per share. That figure was 2 cents per share above analyst estimates.

Ailing Egypt seeks $4.8 billion IMF loan

Egypt?s prime minister says his country has formally asked the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan to help boost its battered economy, and that he expects to reach a deal by the end of the year. (AP Photo/Egyptian Presidency)

(AP) ? Egypt formally asked the International Monetary Fund for a $4.8 billion loan on Wednesday, seeking a desperately needed rescue package for its faltering economy but raising the possibility of painful restructuring in a country still reeling since its revolution more than 18 months ago.

The loan deal, which Egypt says it will reach by the end of the year, presents a major test to the Muslim Brotherhood-rooted president, Mohammed Morsi, the country's first ever freely elected leader, brought to power after the fall of Hosni Mubarak.

The IMF has avoided making specific conditions for a loan but it seeks a cohesive government plan for restarting economic growth and reducing a deficit that has grown to $23.6 billion, some 8.7 percent of gross domestic product.

A key part of that will likely be reducing subsidies that suck up a third of the government budget every year. Touching those subsidies, however, could bring social upheaval, since they keep commodities like fuel and bread cheap for a population of around 82 million, some 40 percent of whom live near or below the poverty line.

"The government will have to take urgent measures, at the top of them cutting energy subsidies," said Mohammed Abu Basha, a Cairo-based economist at investment bank EFG-Hermes Holding SAE. The biggest subsidies are those on fuel ? including gasoline and cooking gas ? costing the government some $16 billion a year.

Egypt's upheaval since the 18-day uprising that led to Mubarak's ouster on Feb. 11, 2011, has pushed its economy toward the brink. Amid near constant instability since, foreign investment has dried up. Revenues from tourism ? one of the country's biggest money makers and employers ? fell 30 percent to $9 billion in 2011 and the industry is only making a meager recovery.

Meanwhile, the government has been burning through its foreign currency reserves, which have plummeted by more than half, to prop up the Egyptian pound and prevent a devaluation that could spur inflation.

The government also faces mounting demands to increase salaries for the millions of civil servants and public sector workers and boost social spending. Infrastructure has crumbled, with electricity and water outages pervasive this summer, bringing angry complaints, some directed at Morsi.

Egypt's hope is that the IMF package ? its first loan from the organization in nearly 20 years ? would provide not only a cash boost but, more importantly, a seal of approval that will bring back international investment.

Morsi, his Prime Minister Hesham Kandil and other Egyptian officials met Wednesday with IMF chief Christine Lagarde in Cairo. State TV said Egypt requested a $4.8 billion loan, up from the $3.2 billion proposal discussed earlier this year. Finance Minister Momtaz el-Said told the state-run Al-Ahram newspaper that the increase was needed because the deficit had grown with the drop in income from investment and tourism.

Lagarde's visit "gives a positive message to Egypt and the whole world that Egypt is stabilizing and that the economy is heading to a recovery," Kandil said. He said he expects a final agreement by December.

Kandil said his government has drawn up a comprehensive economic recovery plan for the IMF that includes strategies to counter the deficit, encourage investment and ensure that subsidies reach those most in need. He did not provide details.

Lagarde said "Egypt faces considerable challenges." An IMF team would start talks in September with the government over its recovery plan and the loan, she said.

"Getting the country's economy back on track and raising the living standards for all will not be an easy task," she said. "The Egyptian people have legitimate expectations for a better life and greater social justice. We at the IMF, stand ready to help."

Abdel-Hafiz el-Sawy, a chief economist with the Muslim Brotherhood who met with earlier delegations from IMF, acknowledged that "the government is facing a mountain of problems, and whenever it gets out of one trap to fall in the next."

"The IMF loan is small but its impact is in the fact that it gives Egypt a certificate that improves the country's economic prospects," he said.

Initial talks over a $3.2 billion loan stalled earlier this year amid wrangling between the military generals who ruled the country since Mubarak's ouster and Islamists who won the majority in the now-dissolved parliament. The Brotherhood had opposed letting the interim, military-appointed government sign a deal putting financial burdens on the next government. The IMF insisted on political consensus before approving the loan.

Since then, Morsi was inaugurated in late June and a month later formed the Kandil-led Cabinet, and the military handed over authority.

The plan presented to the IMF appears to be more or less similar to the previous government's plan, which the Islamist-led parliament had opposed, according to el-Said, the finance minister who also served in the former government, in an interview with el-Shorouk daily.

Now Morsi faces the tough task of economic reform. Already, the government has reduced fuel subsidies to energy-intensive factories which were seen as giving a bonus to the wealthy and increased taxes on Egyptians whose income exceeds 10 million a year.

But still remaining is the question of how to deal with subsidies that keep prices dirt cheap for gasoline and for butane fuel that many rely on for cooking. The gasoline subsidies are widely seen as inefficient because wealthier drivers benefit from them as much as or more than the poor.

The government is studying alternatives, such as distributing to the poor coupons for gas and fuel, while restructuring the tax system.

El-Said, the finance minister, also ruled out a devaluation of the pound ? suggesting that the government hopes that an IMF will bring enough local liquidity to keep the currency strong without infusions from the state's reserves.

The IMF loan will not be enough to cover all Egypt's financing needs. IMF officials said earlier that the country needs a total of $10 billion to $12 billion in outside funding over the next 12 to 15 months.

Qatar has delivered around $500 million of $2 billion it has promised Egypt. Saudi Arabia promised to deposit $1.5 billion in Egypt's Central Bank. But other aid packages from the European Union, the oil-rich Arab Gulf states and other sources will heavily depend on Cairo's ability to secure the IMF loan.

Japan PM likely to call November poll, party set for drubbing

TOKYO (Reuters) - Embattled Japanese Prime Minister Yoshihiko Noda is likely to call a snap election for November, ruling and opposition party members said on Thursday, despite the likelihood that his party will suffer a drubbing.

Noda, who took office last September as Japan's sixth premier in five years, scored a rare policy win this month when parliament enacted a law to double the sales tax to curb public debt. But he had to pledge to call an election "soon" to gain opposition backing to pass the bill in a divided parliament.

Members of Noda's Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) want to put off an election given their sagging support but opposition parties, which control parliament's upper house, can force his hand by blocking a bill to allow fresh bond issues to fund the budget this fiscal year.

"I expect the lower house will be dissolved in October and elections will be called in November," Keiichi Ishii, policy chief of the New Komeito opposition party, told Reuters in an interview.

The New Komeito is an ally of the biggest opposition Liberal Democratic Party (LDP). The parties backed Noda's tax increase legislation.

"The scenario is that parliament will hold an extraordinary session early in October and may pass the deficit bond bill and an extra budget before the prime minister dissolves the (lower) chamber," Ishii said.

"But to secure passage of the bond bill, Noda must promise to hold elections during the extra parliament session."

LDP President Sadakazu Tanigaki, speaking at a news conference, declined to confirm whether he would accept a November poll, saying only that his party wanted a vote as soon as possible.

Democratic Party lawmaker Sumio Mabuchi, however, agreed a November vote was on the cards.

"Of course, no one (in the DPJ) wants an election now but the tide is shaping up already as the prime minister promised to call elections soon to enact the sales tax bill on August 10. It's natural to think elections are drawing near."

FISCAL CLIFF

Finance Minister Jun Azumi has said that unless the funding bill passes, the government could run out of money by the end of October. Lower house members' terms run to August next year but most of them are betting on polls before the end of this year.

Kyodo news agency, citing senior LDP members, said earlier that Noda had indicated in a meeting with the LDP leader that he would call an election before compiling a budget for the next fiscal year, suggesting he had November 4 or November 11 in mind.

Kyodo added, however, that the LDP had rejected the offer and that Noda had also floated an October 7 election date.

"The feeling is growing day by day that we cannot leave the governing of Japan to the Democrats any longer," LDP Vice President Tadamori Oshima told Reuters this month.

The DPJ, a mix of conservatives, centre-left lawmakers and ex-socialists, swept to power in August 2009, pledging to change how Japan was governed after more than 50 years of almost non-stop rule by the conservative LDP.

Three years and three prime ministers later, critics say the Democrats have largely failed to deliver on their promises to reduce bureaucrats' control over policymaking and pay more heed to consumers and workers.

The party has also suffered a series of defections over the tax increase, and is divided over energy policy as Noda tries to decide what role nuclear power should play amid a growing anti-nuclear clamor after last year's Fukushima atomic disaster.

Politicians and analysts agree that the Democrats now look set for defeat. But it is uncertain whether the LDP and junior ally New Komeito can win a majority given widespread voter dissatisfaction with mainstream parties.

That dissatisfaction is reflected in support for populist Osaka Mayor Toru Hashimoto, whose Ishin no Kai party hopes to win seats in parliament.

That means the next government could be a weak coalition, spelling more confusion as Japan grapples with a stagnant economy, rocky ties with China and South Korea, and declining global competitiveness.

Noda's push to increase the sales tax to 10 percent by 2015 was billed as a test of Japan's resolve to tackle its snowballing debt. That debt tops two years' worth of economic output, a record among industrialized nations.

Romney, Ryan pulled into abortion debate

RALEIGH, N.C. (AP) ? Republicans Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan found themselves dragged into a debate Wednesday over hot-button social issues and answering for differences between their personal positions on abortion, just days before a national convention aimed at showing a unified Republican party. The discussion lingered while President Barack Obama and Romney tangled from afar over issues like education and the deficit.

The GOP ticket dealt with a renewed focus on abortion in the wake of comments about "legitimate rape" from Missouri Senate candidate Todd Akin, remarks that have caused an uproar and generated demands from Romney and party leaders for the congressman to quit the race.

The questions over abortion overshadowed events by Romney and Ryan in the battleground states of Iowa, North Carolina and Virginia ? three states which Obama carried in 2008 ? ahead of next week's Republican convention in Tampa, Fla. Obama rallied supporters in Nevada, the state with the nation's highest unemployment rate of 12 percent, before heading to New York for a basketball-themed fundraiser.

Since selecting Ryan as his running mate, Romney has faced questions about how his policy positions differ from those espoused by Ryan, the architect of a controversial budget blueprint that would dramatically alter Medicare. On abortion, Romney does not oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest or if it will save the mother's life, while Ryan does oppose abortion in cases of rape and incest.

Ryan, in an interview with a Pennsylvania TV station, emphasized Romney's role at the top of the ticket, saying he was proud of his record on the social issue. "I stand by my pro-life record in Congress. It's something I'm proud of. But Mitt Romney is the top of the ticket and Mitt Romney will be president and he will set the policy of the Romney administration," he said.

Ryan defended a bill he cosponsored in the House to permanently ban federal funding for abortion except in cases of incest and "forcible" rape. That language, which was eventually changed, would have narrowed the exception for rape victims. Akin and 225 other members of the House, including 11 Democrats, also cosponsored the bill.

Akin, who is challenging Democratic Sen. Claire McCaskill in a race that could determine control of the Senate, was asked in an interview that aired Sunday if abortion should be legal in cases of rape. Akin said: "If it's a legitimate rape, the female body has ways to try to shut that whole thing down."

Democrats have tried to tactfully steer the debate over abortion to appeal to female voters, including those living in hotly-contested suburbs in battleground states such as Colorado, Florida, Ohio and Virginia. Obama did not address Akin's comments in Nevada, but his campaign honed in on the legislation related to federal funding for abortions. Obama campaign spokeswoman Lis Smith said Ryan had "worked with Todd Akin to try to narrow the definition of rape and outlaw abortion even for rape victims."

A new AP-GfK poll found that Obama maintained a slight lead among women voters, with 50 percent of women backing the president and 44 percent supporting Romney. The gender gap was similar to a finding in a June AP-GfK poll. Men were more closely divided in the latest AP-GfK poll, with 49 percent for Romney and 44 percent for Obama. In the suburbs, the candidates were closely divided, with 47 percent supporting Romney and 44 percent for Obama.

Akin has refused to heed calls to step down and now would need a court order by Sept. 25 to leave the race. After that point, there would be no way to remove his name from the ballot. Ryan called the Missouri congressman and unsuccessfully urged him to exit the race, but said he had no other plans to speak to him about it.

"He's going to run his campaign and we're going to run ours," Ryan said of Akin.

Campaigning in Iowa, Romney avoided talk of social issues during a stop at a manufacturing company in Bettendorf, instead criticizing Obama for failing to bring down the nation's debt and deficit. His remarks came hours after the nonpartisan Congressional Budget Office offered dire warnings of a new recession ? including unemployment rates of more than 9 percent by late next year ? if Washington continues its stalemate over taxes and spending cuts.

"It's bad economics," Romney said, without directly addressing the CBO report. "It's the wrong course for America and I believe it's immoral to pass our burdens on to the next generation."

Obama focused on education for a second straight day in Nevada, telling supporters at a North Las Vegas high school that GOP budget plans crafted by Ryan would force dramatic education cuts even as Romney's plan would "shower" tax cuts on millionaires.

"I've got a question for Governor Romney. How many teachers' jobs are worth another tax cut for millionaires and billionaires? How many kids in Head Start are worth a tax cut for somebody like me who doesn't need it? How many grants and loans for college students are worth a tax cut for Governor Romney who certainly doesn't need it?" Obama asked the crowd.

Romney countered that he heard the president "say how he wants to invest in young people. Let me tell you, if you want to invest in young people ... you need to make sure that our K-12 schools are getting better. That's No. 1. Not just talk, but actually getting better." He added that the nation needs "to make sure that we create jobs in this country so people coming out of school can get a good job."

Beyond the rallies, both campaigns were trying to sway voters on television. Romney's campaign released a new ad linking Obama's divisive health care overhaul to cuts in Medicare. The ad, titled "Nothing's Free," asserts that Obama raided $716 billion from Medicare in order to pay for his health care law. It's the first ad Romney's campaign has run focusing on health care since the Supreme Court upheld Obama's federal mandate in June.

Romney has promised to roll back the Medicare spending cuts approved under Obama, while Ryan kept the cuts in his budget proposals. The campaign did not say where the health care ad would run.

The Obama campaign released an ad suggesting Ryan's education cuts would lead to larger class sizes. A couple featured in the ad bemoans the prospect of increased class size and says Romney "cannot relate" to their desire to have the best public education system for their children. The ad is running in Virginia and Ohio.

With Republicans closing in on their convention, Obama's team is trying to steal some of the spotlight. Obama planned campaign events on college campuses in Iowa and Colorado on Tuesday ? including an evening rally in Fort Collins, Colo., on the GOP convention's first night ? and in Virginia on Wednesday. Vice President Joe Biden was traveling to Florida on Monday and Tuesday, including a stop in Tampa, and popular first lady Michelle Obama was appearing on "The Late Show with David Letterman" on Wednesday, a show that will air shortly after Ryan's address to the convention.

Obama won all four states in 2008 and are considered pivotal to Romney's path to the White House this year.

The way that it would be if you were with me...

She was infamous.

The Beauty Queen.
The Ice Queen.
The Queen Bee.

And she had it all. The clothes. The hair. The body.
The ambition to know what she wanted and the brains to help her get it.
She also had him. The perfect boyfriend. He was hot, rich, and he knew it.

And then they broke up. And it was like dominoes, from one bad thing to the next.
Her parents told her they were getting a divorce. She got sick of her group of fake friends. The principal called her to his office.

And he told her that unless she showed some extracurricular activities, her first choice of university wouldn't consider her even with her near-flawless grades.

What was she to do?
She didn't like sport. She didn't have any outstanding hobbies or interests.
Besides shopping, literature and the workings of the universe.

And everyone knows the book club and science clubs were full of nerds.

And then, she had an epipany.
The Lonely Hearts Club.
A place to go and chill out, to drink tea and socialize with fellow loners alike.
It was a pefect plan... All she had to do was sit in school for an extra hour or so, drink tea and do homework.
And it would all lead to those pretty little words on her university application.

Founder & Chairman of The Lonely Hearts Club,

A clear statement to her leadership and organisation abilities, as well as a caring and compassionate nature.

So there you have it, an interest check for a high-school role-play, featuring friendship, romance and drama. The brief character outlines are as follows { which you are free to add to or chop-and-choose yourself } ::

The Beauty Queen :: Gorgeous. Smart. Ruthless. This Queen Bee is out to have the world. She is more brat than bitch, but I wouldn't cross her if I were you, as she takes no prisoners. She's had a lot on her plate recently and after being dumped by her boyfriend, The Rich Prick, and then dumping her own 'friends', she has no interest in interacting with any more human beings in the interests of any kind of companionship until high-school has ended. Being the founder and chairwoman of the Lonely Hearts Clubs is just a ruse to get her way to her top university.

The Rich Prick :: Smokin' hot. Totally loaded. The most arrogant asshole to ever grace these school hallways. This guy does what he wants, when he wants... And who he wants. His never had to work for a thing in his life... Except being captain of the winning swim team. He used to be dating The Beauty Queen but dumped her for reasons no other guy in school can fathom. His father has high expectations of him going to university to study the family business... But is that what he really wants?

The Plain Jane :: Average looks. Average grades. Average family. This girl just blends in with the crowd and does her best not to stand out. Her life's pretty normal... If a little lonely. After moving schools for her final year, she hasn't really clicked with any of the cliques. Sometimes she thinks it would be nice to tell her parents about having real friends.

The Nice Guy :: Kinda cute. A little dorky. A friend to all. This guy is always quick with a joke or happy to offer a shoulder to cry on. After his mom died five years ago, it's been just him and his dad, but they're pulling through. He has no real issues besides that... And the fact he's still a virgin at 18. Maybe it's just something he's doing wrong, but he just can't seem to get the girl.

The Goth Girl :: Black hair. Black make-up. Black clothes. It's no surprise she often gets mistaken for a vampire... Or asked if she worships the devil. She's neither of those things, she's just doing things her own way. Pity it seems she's the only one living the gothic lifestyle in this small town. Her parents think she's harbouring depression. Her teachers get sick of the facial piercings. And her friends are mostly on the internet. Seriously, can't anyone give her a break?

The Bad Boy :: Leather jacket? Check. Motorcycle? Check. Tattoo? Check. This one's from the rough end of the town and he's certinaly living up to the stereotype. He's been held back two years and he's got a crimibal record for fighting. Good thing his boozy father is finally behind bars so him and his mother can have some piece. Maybe this year he'll finally be able to pass and leave this crappy chapter of his life behind for good.

Eventual Romances :: { Bearing in mind these are the ones I'd like to see, so it's fine if were wanna jiggle them round a bit. }

The Beauty Queen x The Bad Boy
The Nice Guy x The Goth Girl
The Rich Prick x The Plain Jane

~ ? ~ ? ~ ? ~

So, if you're interest, drop us a note and we'll see if we can get this happening.
And just so you know, I plan to be playing The Beauty Queen ;)
Until then :)

Entering the world of the sommelier - What are you drinking

I thought I knew a lot about wine. I mean I?ve worked at a winery, I?ve visited tons of them over the years and I even got married at one. I?ve been writing about the subject for a couple of years and have interviewed dozens of winemakers and industry professionals. I thought I knew a lot about wine, until I joined a sommelier study group last January.

That first meeting I was given a quiz with questions like: ?Briefly describe the difference in detection threshold and recognition threshold in regards to wine,? and, ?What is the name for the airborne molecules in wine that allow us to smell its aromas.? What?

The next day I ran out and bought a bunch of text books and study guides to prep for the next week?s quiz.

The study group was made up of eight people who were preparing for various exams held by two leading sommelier organizations, the Court of Master Sommeliers and the Society of Wine Educators. It was led by Bill Elsey, Texas?s Best Sommelier in 2011, who was studying for his Advanced Sommelier exam, the third of four levels in the Court of Master Sommeliers education process.

The interesting thing about the group is that half of the members were not employed in the beverage industry. Two of us were food and drink writers, one a wine PR professional and one just a really interested wine drinker. That?s not your typical make-up for a group studying for this kind of specialized education.

Why would I ? or anyone not in the wine business for that matter, go to the trouble ? time and expense of studying for and taking a sommelier exam? It came down to curiosity, passion for the topic and an intense interest in learning more about the subject about which I so frequently write. The reality is that I had no idea what I was getting into. It was far more than just learning a little about wine.

Over the six months of weekly study groups, blind tastings, quizzes and lots of independent study, I learned all about viticulture, wine production and the geography and grape varieties in major wine producing regions. I also learned the art of discerning where a wine is from, what grape it?s made of and when it was produce with descent accuracy just by looking at it, smelling it, tasting it and deductive reasoning.

I even learned that a puttonyos is the measurement of the sweetness level of Hungarian Tokaji Asz?, which is made from botrytised grapes.

What I also learned is that there is a close fraternity among sommeliers. It turns out that beverage professionals are a tightly knit, highly dedicated and incredibly supportive group of people. Many of them are motivated by the same things that motivated me to join that study group: passion for the topic and an intense interest in learning more about it. In fact, they approach continuing education like a shark constantly on the move.

This was on grand display at TEXSOM, an industry conference dedicated to the education of top beverage professionals in Texas and around the world. The three day conference presented by the Wine & Food Foundation of Texas and the Texas Sommelier Association featured more than a dozen educational sessions, the annual Texas? Best Sommelier competition and the Court of Master Sommeliers Introductory Course and Exam.

TEXSOM was founded in 2005 by James Tidwell MS, CWE, beverage manager at the Four Seasons Resort and Club in Las Colinas; Drew Hendricks MS, CWE, director of beverage education for Pappas Restaurants in Houston and Guy Stout MS, CWE, with Glazer?s Distributors. In its first year, TEXSOM had around 110 attendees; This year there were almost 700.

?James [Tidwell] and I noticed that a lot of people were studying wine, but not taking exams,? Hendricks said. ?We decided to start TEXSOM with an education focus. The star of the conference was and the Texas? Best Sommelier competition, which gives people a free look at what it is like to take sommelier exams. In the second year we started offering the Court?s Intro Exam and since then around 2,700 people have taken it at TEXSOM.?

I was one of those 2,700 people. Aspiring sommeliers, retailers and wholesalers and even members of the general public take the Court?s Intro Exam to get a solid foundation of wine knowledge. The course covered a mind-numbing amount of material in two days.

Master Sommeliers from around the country, including Austin?s own??Devin Broglie and Craig Collins,?lectured on wine regions, proper wine service, beer, spirits and sake. The fun part was the blind tastings and determining what wines we were drinking. It was a little intimidating to stand in front of 80 people and say what country and region the wine was produced in, the grape it was made from and the year it was made, but it was also thrilling to get it right.

Tim Gaiser, MS, the lead instructor for the course, has been teaching wine education since 1993. According to Gaiser, TEXSOM is a perfect place to teach the Court?s Intro Exam, ?It?s easy for us to teach at TEXSOM because we have 25 Master Sommeliers here. We usually have three Master Sommeliers teach the class, but at TEXSOM we have nine. That?s a one of a kind deal.?

At the end of the second day of lectures and tasting, we took the exam: 70 questions to complete in 45 minutes. While I knew I was well prepared for the test, my hands started to sweat and I had to pee. Test anxiety hit! Never fear, I?m thrilled to be one of the few non-beverage industry people in the room to pass the test. All of the hours spent studying were worth it in many ways. In a small way, I just joined the fraternity of professionals that care deeply about sharing information about wine with anyone who is interested.

Would I do it again? Yes, in a heart-beat. Will I go on to take the Court?s Level II Certified Exam? I haven?t decided yet. Maybe if the study group gets back together. You should do it. It was a ton of fun.

What about you? Have you taken a sommelier course? What did you think? If not, are you thinking about taking one?

This story was previously published on CultureMap.

Disclosure: While I paid the $525 to participate in the Intro course, I?received?a complimentary press pass for TEXSOM.?

What are you drinking?

A Lil Dash of Diva: My Life Directive

Guys, I want to tell you about a really important organization that a very good friend of mine founded after experiencing something no one should ever have to experience. I have known Dorothy since I was about 14 or 15, our families met through a church we went to in Sacramento. We have experienced many things together including the birth of 2 of her two younger sons, divorce, moving long distances from each other, death of loved ones and everything in between.

I'll let my friend, Dorothy, the executive director and founder tell you a bit about why she felt this type of organization is needed:

MyLifeDirective.com was founded in memory of my dear father, Richard Rodriguez, who died in a hospital after being admitted in a confused state. The hospital misplaced his wallet and could not determine his identity or contact family members. He spent his last days alone and died before our family was ever notified.
