Why Now Is the Perfect Time to Become an Online Entrepreneur

We're in one of the worst recessions I've ever seen! Is now the right time to become an online entrepreneur? Think for a moment about HP, GE, Sports Illustrated, Trader Joe's, MTV, CNN, Apple, FedEx, Microsoft, Burger King, Disney, Hyatt, and IHOP. What do all these wildly successful companies have in common? They were all started in recessions!

Contrary to what major media outlets would have you believe, this recession is not a wasteland of drudgery and hopelessness, but rather a time for bountiful opportunities. In his book, The Secret of the Millionaire Mind, T. Harv Ecker states, "Rich people see opportunities; poor people see obstacles." For a moment, take a deep breath, step back, and think about the opportunities. Forget about the obstacles. Briefly, allow yourself to live in the 'what if'. Think, "What if I could do something differently in this industry to create value that wasn't there before? Or what if I could find a way to capitalize on some untapped niche? These days, people are really looking for (fill in the blank). What If I could provide that?" Now, can you see the opportunities? If you can, you'll see that you're in the right place (the internet), at the right time (a market that is ripened for your product).

"But," you may think, "isn't it true that 95% of small businesses fail in the first 5 years?" Yes that is true, and online businesses are not an exception to this rule. "So how can I be different and succeed where so many others fail? How can I make sure I'm part of the successful 5% that thrive?" The first key to being successful in your online business is this realization: Selling products online is not a natural talent. No one is born with a keyboard in their hands. It is a skill that can be learned and mastered. You can and will master that skill in order to be successful.

The second rule to becoming a successful online entrepreneur despite a recession is having strict criteria for any opportunity you investigate. There are many opportunities, systems, and business models you can implement to run a successful online business. If you apply the following criteria you can rapidly decrease your learning curve and greatly increase your chances of being successful:

1. Stay away from opportunities that tout an opportunity that is "Quick, Fast, and Easy" or "Takes little or no effort."

2. Follow a mentor or a group of mentors who are successful in the niche you want to pursue.

3. Make sure you're selling a brilliant product or product line that is in high demand.

4. Implement a simple, duplicatable business model that you can plug into.

5. Make sure your compensation pays you upfront money and includes some type of residual income opportunity.

Get out there and get started! Just take the first step. Filter out all the perceived obstacles and look for the opportunities. Many people are launching successful online enterprises right now. You can be one of them. Apply the criteria, and master the skills required. Start part-time if you need to, but get started with your online business now. It's the perfect time! If you do, you can transform yourself into a successful online entrepreneur and soon join the ranks of other wildly successful companies who got started in a recession.
