Homeschooling and How It Affects Children Socialization ? Article Buzz

by Cortney1Yod on June 29, 2011

Millions of families are using various approaches to homeschooling their children. Because things have changed over the years, people may have misconceptions about homeschooling. There are no longer any issues surrounding socialization, according to supporters of homeschooling. They also believe that the healthy development of socialization skills has never really been a problem. Studies have been done on this subject going back for more than ten years. These studies have concluded that the socialization skills of home schooled children are generally more advanced.

One approach to solving the socialization issue is seek out other families in your location who also home-school. You can find activity groups on the internet but this approach raises some safety concerns. There are so many homeschoolers across the US that it is almost guaranteed that you will find some in your area. When you contact them, ask if they can introduce you to other local families. But since the internet has become a very social place, it?s really a natural place to look. Of course you can always start your own group online or even create a Facebook group for people in your area.

4-H clubs have been around for years and you?ve probably heard about them. They offer many clubs for kids to join, based on their interests. And if they?re interested, all of your children can become involved. 4-H clubs are a great way to introduce your children to others their age and they cost nothing to join. Because of the internet, children are better able to network than they were in years past. So, the kids your children meet through 4-H clubs will most likely introduce them to their friends.

It is also interesting when you look at institutional education from other perspectives. Obviously, one of the functions of typical schools is to foster socialization.

Yet it?s not only socializing that schools encourage, but also a respect for rules and authorities. To some extent, this is certainly necessary, yet there are also negative consequences to this. While obedience is necessary in some areas, when this idea is over-emphasized, a child?s creative spirit may be suppressed. Schools, in their need for order and conformity, can often stifle some important qualities in children, such as creative and independent thought. It does seem that a child who is home-schooled has an even greater opportunity for a higher quality of education and even social development. This is partially due to their parents understanding the need to get their children out in various settings with other children. You should be able to find plenty of groups available where kids can be with others their age.
