Genre and Market | The Memoirs Publishing Blog

Works of fiction are marketed according to their genre and generally speaking these include history, romance, science fiction, fantasy, horror, crime and thrillers or the non-genre, genre known as literary or contemporary fiction

You can only predict a market if you first choose a genre to write within and then follow its formulaic rules. There are particular conventions for each fiction genre that can be either followed or ignored.

The benefits of writing a work of fiction that follows the conventions of a particular genre is that you can gauge a better idea of your target market and reader, which will help when writing your narrative. Writing within a genre allows you to write a story that appeals to a particular market whilst following a particular formula. Having a set of guidelines to follow when writing your narrative can be very helpful in an otherwise subjective, grey area as it can give you some focus and help you decide upon a plan of attack rather than struggling to decide upon a direction with endless possibilities.? Writing a genre fiction also allows a bookshop or online retailer to classify your book easily, which in turn makes it easier for a reader to locate it, which is why genre fiction sells best.

?Literature precedes genre.?

Rick Moody

A well written narrative will not fail to do well, whether defies the rules of a formulaic novel or falls into the category of genre less work or literacy or contemporary fiction. Therefore you may find it best to write a narrative on whichever subject matter you wish and then see which particular genre category you fall into or not as the case may be. It is likely that your narrative is likely to lean towards one genre or another so you can choose to market it as such.

In today?s highly competitive market it is important that works of fiction, whatever the genre or non-genre, are built upon strong narratives, convincing characters and in so doing, are an enjoyable read. Often you will enjoy writing, what you enjoy reading and if you enjoy writing it, its likely to be written well. If you get bored writing it, it?s very likely to be boring to read. So above all else, write what you enjoy to write and allow genre categories and conventions to guide, not hinder you.
