Local Women Fight to End Domestic Violence

CHAMBERSBURG, PA - "Shannon was a family person," says Brenda Miller, Aunt of Shannon Shockey, and event director of "Eat, Sleep, Run, Grow."

Twenty year-old Shannon Shockey of Waynesboro was murdered by her ex-boyfriend after she broke-up with him to get out of what her family calls an unhealthy relationship.

"My niece, Shannon Shockey, fifteen years ago today she lost her life due to domestic violence; a definite tragedy, she was twenty years-old. For fifteen years, my family has just felt like it was left open," says Miller.

In honor of Shannon, her Aunt Brenda Miller started the event called, "Eat, Sleep, Run, Grow," to teach women to say no to domestic violence.

"It is wonderful. Everybody showed up and everybody was so happy. I think everybody made a good friend," says Anna Jones, a participant.

The workshop helps others avoid tragic relationships like Shannon's through living a balanced life with sports and nutrition.

"Any woman can boost their confidence in any area of life; it spreads over to your work, to your family if you're a PTA mom, whatever. Women need to nurture and take care of themselves first, before they even go out. We are caregivers, that's what we do, but we need to be healthy to do that," adds Miller.

One hundred-fifty women participated, learning how to run smart and practice yoga, while listening to motivational speakers.

"Learn everything about yourself, and confidence and it's just everything. This event is amazing," says Jones.

"On this day every year, we want to smile, we want to celebrate. I know that she's here with us," shares Miller.

A life lost, but remembered always.

All proceeds go to the shelter "Women in Need," for Franklin and Fulton Counties. See their website.
