MEDINIA - If there was ever a time when weather sirens should have gone off, it was Monday night when three strong tornadoes touched down just south of town. So the question is: Why didn't they?

Medinia County Sheriff Randy Brown said his dispatchers did activate the sirens from the sheriff's office in Hondo, however; apparently the signal never made it to the sirens in Devine and Natalia.

Working with the vendors of the sirens, Sheriff Brown is trying to find a more reliable digital frequency to put the sirens on.

Even though the county was unable to sound the sirens, city officals in both Natalia and Devine also had the capability to turn on the sirens Monday but did not.

Natalia Mayor Ruby Vera said she was waiting for a phone call from the sheriff giving her the authority to turn the city's siren on.

"We were wating for the phone call," she explained. "That's the protocol for everything to go through the sheriff's office."

Sheriff Brown said the cities do not need his permission to turn on the weather sirens and never have.

Vera said next time she is not waiting for a call. ?She'll just activate the siren on her own.

When asked if the sirens will work next time, Sheriff Brown gave a less than confident response.

"I don't know. ?All we can do is push the button and say a prayer."
