Effective Networking #11 | Potential Un-limited :: Dinah Liversidge

11) Be consistent with your effort.? Attend regularly if you want to build relationships

?I left my networking group because I got nothing out of it?.? I have heard this many times.? My first question is usually ?What did you expect to get?? swiftly followed by??What did you put into it??

I usually find there is a common theme to the answers; most had no plan so they are not sure what they expected, and most have not attended as often as they should.?

Joining a structured group means you need to make a commitment to be there.? Relationships take time to develop and when you miss meetings, this takes longer.? It also gives a message about you ? one that makes people wary about recommending you and risking their own credibility when you let them down.

I remember working with a BNI Chapter in North London a couple of years ago, and a member there told me the amount of business she had received that year was down by 30% on the previous year and she was thinking of not renewing.? I pointed out to her that she had had substitutes attending the meeting on her behalf for almost half the meetings. ?We were busy? she said.? ?And I still sent someone so it?s not like I was absent.?

It is all about your mind-set really.? If you see your regular networking meeting as a meeting with your best clients and advocates, then nothing else is more important to your business.? If you see your networking as time out of the office ? you will fail to gain the real benefit and you are damaging your own credibility by ?playing? at it.

The key lesson here is a simple one ? relationships require commitment and people will not build relationships with you if you don?t turn up.?
